Julebryg-style dark rye ale
Don’t worry, we’re pronouncing it wrong, too. Rugbrød, the classic Danish dark rye bread, inspired our 2018 brew of the same name, which in turn sparked this 2022 rebrew. Brewed with three types of rye malt, this robust brown ale showcases the earthy, spicy character of the grain, balancing perfectly with bready, nutty, slightly roasty notes from barley malts.

What is this? A deep red beer with a huge over carbonated tan head, how come it is so over carbonated? infection - definately not a Danish style! The aroma has notes of burnt caramel and spices. The flavor is sweet with notes or roasted malt, spices and an off-note.

22 fl oz bottle, courtesy of Ungstrup. Pours dark orange and with a small off-white head. Spiced and dry malty note. Bitter, dry, yeasty and spiced flavoured, Dry into a roasted finish, Light spice note. Malty yes, but too carbonated.

Bottle. Dark opaque brown, golden lacing head. Light bready nose, orangepeel aroma. Ryebread edges in the back, apricot and orangepeel. Nice balance, best use of rye so far and very enjoyable. medium to light body, somewhat overcarbonatef. It does not have much to do with a Danish julebryg - it is much better.

pours dark brown, off-white head aroma spices, rye, chocolate malts flavors, caramel/chocolate malts, light hints of spices and rye. Thick palate with a chocolate finish and mild yeast notes mixed with some hop bitterness.

Bottle from NickD717, thanks! Dark brown color, pours a huge head. Apple syrup and rye bread in the aroma and flavor. Some glue-like bitterness. Apples and a hint of caramel in the aftertaste. Somewhat fizzy.

750 mL bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a deep, dark brown color with a large tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of dry bready notes, raisins and rye. Other sweet malty notes as well. Taste is dark malts, caramel, raisins, berries, rye, chocolate. Smooth, medium bodied. Very tasty.

75cl bottle @ Hj Hansen, Odense. Gusher... Pours dark brown with a ruby edge and a large creamy white foam and lacings. Nose is vague roast, caramel, rye, yeast and a tart note of dark fruits. Lively carbonation. Taste is roasted caramel, rye and spices. Smooth and full bodied. Well balanced and tasty. Good! Rerating Bottle @ Odense Tasting, Feb 2010. A sour note in both aroma and flavor which was heavier 2nd time around. Yeast, spice and tart fruit. Im not sure it is meant to be there?? From 3,7 - 3,2

Pours deep mahogany into a lager glass. Huge tan micro head with unbelievable retention ice cream cones and recedes. Chocolate and rye aromas. LIvely pumpernickel upfront turning to spicy sweet rye in the lasting finish.

750ml bottle @Pauls Gathering Thanks vferg/Victor-pours a big foamy tan head and hazy amber color. Aroma is slightly sweet medium malt-caramel, some earthy hops. Taste is slightly sweet medium malt-caramel, some earthy hops. Interesting.

Pours a cloudy reddish brown, fizzy, foamy head - loads of rye in the nose, as well as dark bread/pumpernickel, roasted nuts, tobacco leaves, chocolate - huge, abrasive carbonation in the mouth (I hate that!) - taste is semi-dry - very bitter rye flavor, nearly sour at times, especially in the finish - now I can see why most rye beers use a lot of hops - you need them to balance out the rye - this beer has none that I can tell - moderate yeasty flavor - a bit of tobacco - some nutty character, maple - lingering sourish rye flavor, dry cocoa - meh.
