Julebryg-style dark rye ale
Don’t worry, we’re pronouncing it wrong, too. Rugbrød, the classic Danish dark rye bread, inspired our 2018 brew of the same name, which in turn sparked this 2022 rebrew. Brewed with three types of rye malt, this robust brown ale showcases the earthy, spicy character of the grain, balancing perfectly with bready, nutty, slightly roasty notes from barley malts.

750 ml bottle pour. Pours a dark reddish brown with a temporary cola like head. First things first, I went into this one accepting the risk, because i can’t stand rye bread. That being said, I’m still a little surprised I went for a beer that directly translates to it, but I gotta try them all eventually. Plus these guys have done so little wrong for me in the past. Slightly sour malty aroma up front with almost a wine grape background. Grainy, malty flavor with the obvious rye. A little bit of a sour kick as well, which is nice. Has a bit of a dark fruit flavor bite up front as well, but mellows out well in the finish. I was pleasantly suprised that I ended up liking this beer a lot more than expected. It’s one of those beers for me that just kept getting better as it went. Well hidden alcohol. I enjoyed this.

Bottle. Brown beer. Aroma is sweet and herbal. Taste is very malty, with some rye and sweet spices. Bit of a letdown, considering the Bruery standards.

Clear amber color with a fine tan head. Bready and a bit fruity aroma. Nice body. Fresh and a bit rich carbonation. Tasty stuff. Fruity, bready and caramel flavor.

Tap at Churchkey. Light copper color with a thin white head and scant lacing. Aroma of pumpernickel and lemon. Flavor has rye and caramel. Nice enough.

Very nicely done. Great bite of rye grain here. Pours dark brown with OK head and lacing. Some booze and a little Belgian floral action. Light bitter and sweet finish. Tap at Scion for Bruery event.

Leicht trübes dunkelbraunes Bier mit schöner Schaumkrone. Geruch sehr röstmalzig, reife dunkle Früchte, Kaffee, schokoladig, genauso ist auch der Geschmack.

Bottle at the Beer Temple, Amsterdam Open Bottle evening, April 2014. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin off-white head. The aroma is rich red berry fruit and yeast. The flavour is medium sweet light bitter with a smooth ripe blackberry fruit light hop bitter rye wheat palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Bottle. Deep ruby liquid with medium light brown head. Aroma of bread, pepper, toffee, caramel, toast, chocolate, spices and raw sugar. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter with notes of bread, raw sugar, toffee, dried fruit and sweet alcohol. Medium bodied with low to medium carbonation. Nice, but Danish? I don’t know.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance is a dark brown colored body with a half finger of a somewhat white foamy head that dies immediately. The smell gets somewhat yeasty, yet acts like a Brown Ale by showcasing some malty/nutty sweetness.
The taste is sweet yet somewhat complex with a decent backing by the malts and a raison-like quality coming through, It has a very malt-like sweet aftertaste. I’m actually not sure how I feel about that just yet; no finish.
On the palate, she sits about a medium and comes across fairly sessionable. I could be wrong but this brew has the feel of a Brown Ale - no worries ’cause I love Brown Ales, so yeah, kinda smooth.
Overall, this is a rye beer? Is that what this is supposed to be? Ok, fair enough, good for the style, but there’s more than enough complexities that say this just might be more than any old Rye Beer anyone might be lookin’ for.
