Julebryg-style dark rye ale

Don’t worry, we’re pronouncing it wrong, too. Rugbrød, the classic Danish dark rye bread, inspired our 2018 brew of the same name, which in turn sparked this 2022 rebrew. Brewed with three types of rye malt, this robust brown ale showcases the earthy, spicy character of the grain, balancing perfectly with bready, nutty, slightly roasty notes from barley malts.

Split a bottle. Poured a ruby brown color with a slightly off-white head, medium sized. Aroma was grains, some sweetness - caramel notes, nutty and a touch of spicy rye. Flavor was some grains, earthy notes. Sweetness remains.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 9/30/2013. Pours fairly crystal clear dark ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, raisin, prune, pear, apple, brown sugar, brown bread, rye, toast, biscuit, molasses, clove, pepper, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of yeast and malt notes; with good strength. Taste of caramel, raisin, pear, prune, brown sugar, toast, biscuit, rye, brown bread, clove, pepper, herbal, floral, and toast/yeast earthiness. Minimal bitterness present on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, raisin, prune, pear, brown sugar, rye, biscuit, toast, clove, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance, complexity, and robustness of malt and fruity/spicy yeast flavors; with a great malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a moderately slick and slightly syrupy mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a great Belgian Rye beer. All around great balance and complexity of malt and Belgian yeast flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Big bottle picked up at Barley Wine, Copenhagen. Clear mahogany coloured body. Fast fading beige head, fragile lacing left down the glassware. Dark malty nose with a little fruity tartness behind. Quite rich taste character of dark bread, earth and nuts linked with a delicate spicy touch. Dark fruity ending with subdued notes of yeast fruity tartness. Fine bodied. Perfect beer for the winter season (enjoyed at my hotel room in Copenhagen 09.12.2013).

Bottle, thanks SirLimpsalot. Almost black with a small head. Aroma and taste of spices, malt, toffee, "Trocadero", dark bread. The body was suprisingly "light". An ok one.

Smell of bread. Copper colour, extreme light brown head. Aroma of alcohol, rye, oak, mämmi. Bitter, finish is slightly sweet. Oily and heavy. Fizzy and plentiful carbon. Some yeast to be noted.

8% part of the 3000 yen tasting set at CBB. Dark reddish brown pour, almost glossy black in certain lights. Caramel, toffee, chocolate, candied plums & a hint of rye. Full bodied, smooth, cacao nibs, toffee, rye spicy character & a woodsy finish. Quite nice.

Old rating rerated 28.06.2013, tap @ Tørst:
Nice creamy shortlasting head. Aroma is slightly neutral, sour-ish rye bread, hay, burnt caramel, dark sugar, coffee. Taste is slightly fruity sour-ish, dark malts, dark sugar, burnt caramel, grass, sour-ish rye bread, paint, almond essence. Medium bitterness, slightly dry mouthfeel. Fair enough, but I can’t really say I understand what people see in this one that’s so fantastic.
