Julebryg-style dark rye ale
Don’t worry, we’re pronouncing it wrong, too. Rugbrød, the classic Danish dark rye bread, inspired our 2018 brew of the same name, which in turn sparked this 2022 rebrew. Brewed with three types of rye malt, this robust brown ale showcases the earthy, spicy character of the grain, balancing perfectly with bready, nutty, slightly roasty notes from barley malts.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; dark chestnut brown pour with big fluffy off white head, dark fruity aroma, sweet tasting with rye spice, very earthy and malty.

Capones, Norristown draught: Pours a brownish color with beige head. Aroma is at first quite musky, but then after a bit I started to get more fruity and yeasty as it settled. Taste is sweet and spicy, with a small hop bite. Nice amount of complexity. Nice.

Tap. Pours cloudy chestnut with a small beige head, creamy with decent lacing. Aroma is spicy, rye bread, some yeast. Flavor is medium sweet, quite spiced, with a light zesty tartness as well. Full bodied and creamy mouthfeel, but over the top on its spice profile for my own tastes.

0.75l bottle shared with The Tasting Crew. This is one of those I have been looking forward to. Liquefied rye bred? Well, let's see. It pours clear dark deep brown-amber body, some medium sized floaters and a massive gigantic really good looking lasting off-white head. It's caramel and sweetness that hits you first, then I get chocolate, malts, minerals, roasted rye and hints of cocoa. I quite liked this! It has a average carbonation level and a soft oily texture. Flavors are also a bit sweet at first, then I get more cocoa, milk chocolate, dark and red berries, licorice, and my god this one has a really good dark malty, sweet aftertaste with a clear burned rye and dry cocoa powder aftertaste! Lot's of thing going on here! This is one of those I have to try again! Really really tasty! 21.06.2012

Reddish brown, beige diminishing head. Aroma of chocolate, molasses, caramel, lots of coffee and dark rye bread. Quite sweet flavour, dark rye bread. Sweet finish, molasses and rye bread.
Yeah, I get the rye bread. Mission accomplished, I’d say.

Sampled from bottle @ RBBWG 2013. Hazy red-brown color, small off-white to beige head. Smell and taste malts, lightly alcohol, lightly sweetness. Medium to full body and carbonation.

Välbalanserad öl med smak och doft av karamell, rågbröd, torkad frukt, bränt socker, brända mandlar. Strong ale känsla, likt en belgisk mörk öl. Gott.

Bottle at the Cask, Pimlico - 14/12/12. Hazed dark amber with a thin tan head that escapes to the edge of the glass and leaves a small film. Nose is yeasty, dark malt, raisen, spice, bitter orange peel, dark fruits, spruce bark. Taste follows, bread, dark fruits, yeast notes, spice. Fuller end of medium bodied, fine carbonation.
