Julebryg-style dark rye ale
Don’t worry, we’re pronouncing it wrong, too. Rugbrød, the classic Danish dark rye bread, inspired our 2018 brew of the same name, which in turn sparked this 2022 rebrew. Brewed with three types of rye malt, this robust brown ale showcases the earthy, spicy character of the grain, balancing perfectly with bready, nutty, slightly roasty notes from barley malts.

Flaska från ölbutikken i Köpenhamn. Söt doft som verkligen är som att brya isär ett saftigt mörk rågbröd. Smaken har en stor växande sötma, sirap, estrar som drar åt tall och tvål, lätt bränd, karamellkok och brända mandlar och så rgbröd. Funkar perfekt till smörgåsbordet.

Clear ruby red to purple beer, small off-white head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: caramel, raisins, sweet, some spices, bit bready, grains. MF: lively carbon, too much actually, medium body. Taste: little bitter, caramel, brown sugar, bit sourish, spices, some star anise, liquorish, mocha, some banana. Aftertaste: caramel, spices, liquorish, aniseed, some bitter hops, bit woody, dried fruits, banana, raisins, some alcohol. Pretty complex, but not my thing.

Gusher. Big beige head. Deep amber body with lots of little particles. Roasty earthy lavender aroma with herbal spicy notes. Dry-sweet roasty earthy (faintly acidic) taste with grainy rye compost and fruit notes, slightly perfumy. Mid-to-full body. Mild, soft, smooth mouthfeel. Dry-acidic earthy roasty rye crisp bread taste with chocolatey vinegary spicy notes. Traces of banana, too. Quite complex, but a bit earthy and compost-like for me. (0.75l bottle, wine monopoly, Vika, Oslo.)

Light gushing to not so big, dense & fien cream head over fully hazy dark red-brown beer. Chocolate, dark other grain, parsley, fresh (non-C) hops. Sourish, like indeed, ryebread, or Sauerbrot, with a bready, sweet background. Some dry, grainy, not quite bitterish undertow. At least medium bodied, quite slick but no solid filling as with gristslickness. Some alcohol; coffee in the aftertaste. Very convincing, it really tastes as liquid ryebread, with a dash of coffee, before leaving for work...

Bottle courtesy of Nisse666. Pours very dark reddish wooden brown with a frothy and creamy brownish gray head that leaves some trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is slightly sweet, tiny sour, malty and spicy with dark rye bread, black pepper, orange zest, lemon zest, caraway, plums and hints of caramel. Taste is sweet, bitter and tiny sour with dark rye bread, orange zest, caraway, liquorice root, mandarin oranges, black pepper, ginger and hints of cardamom. Mouthfeel is round, tiny tart and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet, bitter and tiny sour with dark rye bread, orange zest, caraway, liquorice root and hints of burnt caramel.

Bottle, 75cl. It pours and unclear, amber body under a small, dense, light beige head. Coffee, chocolate notes and a faint sourish touch in the aroma. The flavor is sweetish, yet it feels dry on the palate, with coffee and chocolate blending in. More on the nutty than the bready side, but quite pleasant anyway. Full body and nice carbonation. Chocolate and a pleasant bitterness in the end. I expected more from this beer, it’s nice, that’s for sure, but it’s far from a winner in my book. 111229

Hazy dark red-brown beer. Small off white head. Semi dry palate. Fresh dark malt with nice undertones of cocoa-chocolate and dark red fruits. Hints of cherry and plum. A mild rye spice then kicks in before a dry malt finish with subtle notes of bubblegum and more red fruits. Quite subtle for a rye beer but has a nice line up if positive characteristics.
