Porter style Ale. Chocolate and beer! Are we Mad? We’d rather say passionate. We marry the soothing flavour of this complex malt barley grist with a hint of dark chocolate. This is a beer for your more self-indulgent moments. Great for lazy afternoons or long evenings, it is best served chilled with your feet up, watching the sun go down. Like we say – chilled.
A silky-smooth suppertime beer, created using dark malts and chocolate. Pronounced vanilla notes fuse the chocolate and malts together to give a rich, warming, flavour that also works well as a complement to fruity desserts, summer puddings and autumn berries.

Bottle at Artisan Tap, Bedford. Dark brown, translucent with a sizeable tight light tan head. Coffee and blackberry compete with a metallic tinge in the aroma. Taste is sweet, rich and chocolatey. Velvety chocolate hit in the finish, alongside a surprisingly bitter hop note. Palate is quite thin, a bit of a letdown. Verdict: Meantime are getting a lot of hate recently since the takeover, and their beers can be hit and miss. This is really nice although... maybe not quite as ’authentic’ as I’d like...

330ml bottle. Pours a clear very dark brown colour with a small light tan head. Aroma is of dark chocolate, malt, vanilla. Taste is dark sweet malts with a chocolate hit and some vanilla. Smooth. Some bitterness in the finish. Loved this.

330 ml bottle as Chocolate Porter @ Giddy Bridge, Southampton. Practically black body with a moderate sized, creamy tan head. Lovely aroma of dark chocolate that doesn’t leave room for so much more. Flavor is sweet, but not overwhelming sweet dark chocolate, mild roasted dark malt and some bitterness. One dimensional but quite nice, there is some kind of balance here and the chocolate is safely at the “dryer” side of “too sweet”. Fine balanced body and long lasting, smooth chocolate aftertaste. Easy to finish the bottle, but would avoid another one straight ahead.

330ml bottle. Pours a clear brown with a red hue and a large, frothy, long lasting, beige head that laces nicely. Sweet aroma of chocolate malt, roasted malt and vanilla. Sweet flavour of chocolate malt, roasted malt and vanilla with a slightly dry, bitter coffee finish. Medium body with a smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. Not bad.

Black beer with a white head and a light smell of chocolate. As you might expect the flavour has a hit of chocolate too along with the malt. Sweet and rich. Nice.

Bottle at the Ritz (JDW), Lincoln. Black colour with a thick off white head. Aroma has an initial hit of chocolate. Taste initially sweet with a malty finish.

Dark brown, semi-opaque and clear, with a beige head with decent retention. It has a smell fresh, with cocoa, vanilla, milk chocolate, roasted malts. The taste follows the same notes. Bitter-sweet finish, very light body (could have done with a bit more thickness) and medium carbonation.

Bottle at home, from Gall & Gall, as Chocolate Porter. Didn’t realize it would be an alias. Clear dark brown with tan head. Sweet roasted chocolate and caramel malts, rye and raisins, after first impact becomes bit woody and watery. Over medium sweet and light choco bitter, slightest note of sour lingering in the woodiness. Medium body, quite malty and feels slick. Soft carbonation and a solid albeit a bit lineair more-sweet-than-bitter bittersweet chocolate finish. /// Earlier rating: Fles bij Van Alsem.
