In 2006, almost exactly 10 years after we first released Stone Smoked Porter, Stone Small Batch Brewer Laura Ulrich had a brilliant idea: What if she added whole Madagascar vanilla beans to a small batch of the finished beer? And voilà, Stone Smoked Porter w/Vanilla Bean was born! It was an instant hit, as the resulting flavor combinations—rich vanilla melding with the malty, chocolaty, coffee-like characteristics of the beer—were practically made for each other. Originally available only as an occasional growler fill or on tap all-too-briefly at special events or in our restaurant, this exquisite creation was released in a single bottle run for the first time in 2012, much to the delight of its many fans…who instantly began clamoring for more. Tap at the stagshead. pours jet black with light reddish head. nose of vanilla bean. tastes mostly of vanilla, light smokiness, earth, coffee, dark chocolate. very round palate and a touch too sweet for huge portions but very pleasant in small doses

I bought this despite what I thought was a poor showing by chipotle version - nose has a lot of vanilla extract character and not much else - maybe a little smoke and/or char - medium body - the texture is fairly nice - creamy, with medium carbonation - flavor is simple - equal parts sweet vanilla and strong char, followed by a moderate bitterness, none of which comes together all that well - I like the chipotle better - sigh.

Bottle thanks to timfoolery: Poured a brown black with a very thin edgy red tint, the head was beige but dissipated fast. Aroma is light smoke not as strong as other versions. Taste is very vanilla bean up front with a slight roasted smoke finish.

12 ounce bottle. Pours transluscent brown with reddish highlights. Medium-sized bubbly beige head. Aroma of subtle roasted malt with hints of smoke and vanilla. Soft velvety smoked malt flavor with hints of light roast coffee. Medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel that showcases the essence of the vanilla beans. Light hop finish.

355 ml bottle @ OT. Pours dark reddish brown with a small beige head that doesn’t leave much trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet with sweet dark bread, sugary vanilla, powdered sugar, charred wood, vanilla custard, sweetened dark roast coffee, smoke and brown sugar. Taste is sweet, bitter and malty with dark bread, vanilla fudge, smoke, roasted malts, charred wood, dark roast coffee and hints of smoked meat. Mouthfeel is round, tiny watery and medium bodied. Finish is bitter and slightly dry with roasted malts, smoke, wood and vanilla essence. Rather unpleasant intense vanilla that isn’t supported by the rest of the beer.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy tan head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was sour, tangy and malty with touches of wood, vanilla and fruity hops. The flavor was dryish, malty and woody with notes of vanilla, cocoa and marshmallow. Long dry, vanilla and wood finish. Moderately full bodied.

35,5 cl bottle @ lusikka, EB 20.09.2012
Vertical With Smoked Porter, this one was better
Aroma is rather strong on vanillin sugar and perhaps some distant cocoa notes. Flavour has vanillin sugar, some smoke and cocoa. The vanilla notes get stronger towards to the finish and linger rather long in the aftertaste. A real vanilla overdose – but I like it.

Enjoy by 09.20.12, vertical with regular one - Pours dark brown, almost black with a small foamy head. Aroma of vanillin sugar, some roastiness, hints of chocolate and coffee. Taste is roasty and sweetish with a lot of vanillin sugary notes, hints of vanilla, coffee and chocolate. Finish is roasty and slightly sweetish with vanilla notes. Nice, quite tasty but the vanillin sugary notes dominate slightly too much.

Bottled at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Transparently black, small head. Aroma of only vanilla. Dryish with slender body and clean mouthfeel. Vanilla overpowers everything else. Some salty resiny bitterness. Why ruin a perfectly good beer like this?

bottle - Pours dark brown with a small light tan head. The aroma is heavy on the vanilla and has roasted malt. The flavor is roasty and smoky though not extremely so. It’s moderately bitter with notes of dark chocolate and vanilla. This brew is full bodied with a long, bitter, roasted finish. Very good.
