In 2006, almost exactly 10 years after we first released Stone Smoked Porter, Stone Small Batch Brewer Laura Ulrich had a brilliant idea: What if she added whole Madagascar vanilla beans to a small batch of the finished beer? And voilà, Stone Smoked Porter w/Vanilla Bean was born! It was an instant hit, as the resulting flavor combinations—rich vanilla melding with the malty, chocolaty, coffee-like characteristics of the beer—were practically made for each other. Originally available only as an occasional growler fill or on tap all-too-briefly at special events or in our restaurant, this exquisite creation was released in a single bottle run for the first time in 2012, much to the delight of its many fans…who instantly began clamoring for more. 11/12/12/12//12

Draught @ Moeder Lambic during the Stone vs Moeder Lambic event. Opague, pitch black colour with a creamy off white head. Smells smokey, vanilla, chocolate and coffee - very, very nice. Tastes coffee, vanilla, icecream, mocca and hops. Great carbo and a full, strong body. One of my favorite beers, to bad i will probably not drink this one again any time soon.

Draught at Chez Moeder Lambic Fontainas during the three day Stone Event, 16-18 september 2011. Pitch black, opaque color. Creamy off-white to beige head. Smells horrible! The mix of vanilla with smoke doesn’t do any good in my opinion. [Dutch: ruikt naar hopjesvla!] Taste vanilla, smoked. Probably others can describe it way better. Just not my beer I guess.

Draft @ Stone vs. Moeder event, Moder Lambic, Brussels.

draft@Stone vs. Moeder: pitch black with beige/mocha head, smells like vanilla ice-cream, minor chocolate & some slightly smoked malts, tastes like vanilla ice-cream, chocolate, dark malts, slight dark fruit, once it warmed up, I also started getting a roasted aftertaste with a whiff of smoke, not sure if smoking it, improved it, malty/ice-creamy body but still a bit light body, a bit too light probably, not bad at all

On draught at Winking Lizard. The beer is a dark brownish-black color with a thin tan head that diminishes to a film. Thin rings of lacing on the glass. Subtle smoke in the nose behind roasted malt and vanilla scents. Medium body with a roasty and lightly smoky character and flavors of caramel malt, vanilla and a bit of chocolate. The finish remains roasty and the vanilla taste lingers. Good beer all around.

Rich hazy brown body with a thin tan head. Aroma of a touch of smoke, some light malt, some caramel and way too many vanilla pods. Meidum-bodied; Potent sweetness, some smoke and peat flavours with a touch of malt in the back, but again the vanilla is quite a bit too potent - tastes more like the vanilla was used to try to cover up all of the other tastes. Overall, not such a great beer but nice to try anyways. I sampled this pint on draught at the Goat Hill Tavern with haddon90 on 27-August-2011 in Costa Mesa, California.

Cask at GBBF 2010. A dark brown beer with a red shine and no head. The aroma has notes of vanilla and roasted malt. The flavo ris sweet with ntoes of vanilla, malt, and caramel and just a hint of smoke, leading to a dry vanilla finish. A bit too much vanilla for my liking.

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Deep nearly opaque garnet body, thin buff head. Nose of cocoa, coffee, vanilla, and smoke. Bitter, tannic, almost astringent body, relatively light, with vanilla and light sweetness. Cocoa and coffee slowly develop with warmth, but vanilla tends to dominate the palate. Bitter finish.
