“a stout of great contention”
We are not the harbingers of truth as some may suggest but it may indeed be argued that our brewing philosophy is tantamount to a dessert with a bellicose past. How, you may ask, would a brewery determine a likeness to hard-coated custard? Our response is simple; it’s all in the power of history, and of course, the extra finesse needed to top off a contentious treat with definition.

Purchased at West Lakeview Liquors in Chicago, IL; enjoyed while watching the Packers vs. the Bears in week 3 of NFL football with a friend. Appearance is pitch black, medium thickness, very small tan head. Aroma dominated by vanilla, caramel, and chocolate, smells like a fantastic dessert. Taste very similar to the aroma, compiled with a nice alcohol burn in the back end, thick body and decent carbonation. Extremely decadent and very good, but i feel like a sugar rush will be coming on after i finish my glass.

Bottle with gooovikings in KC. Thanks Jetson! Deep brown appearance with a brown head. Intense caramel, chocolate, vanilla, dessert nose. Dark chocolate malty, rich caramel, toffee flavor. Slightly syrupy mouth feel. Huge toffee dessert aftertaste. It’s unbelievable that these flavors are in a beer.

Bottle, 22oz, at Haandverkerstuene. It pours a dark brown body, looking clear, and with a fingerthick beige head. The aroma is just gorgeous, plain f..king gorgeous, with it’s heavy caramel sauce and coffee. Some roasted malts and vanilla sweetness, and a touch of alcohol. Damn it’s nice, I think it took me ten minutes or more before I dared taste it, afraid as I was it might taste crappy. Crappy compared to the aroma I mean. Well, it wasn’t. It’s not at the same divine level, but still damn fine, with a good hoppy bitterness bringing some balance. Roasted malts and alcohol notes, coffee, caramel and more caramel, maybe a bit much, in the flavor. Full-bodied, smooth and nicely carbonated, and a lasting finish. Wow, hope I get another chance to drink this one. 110211

Opaque black pour with a small fleeting tan head. Rich coffee and chocolate aroma. Smells like a coffee roasting house. Sweet and rich flavor that follows the aroma. Smooth - dessert in a glass!

650 ml bottle. Dark brown body with a thin beige head. Aroma is dominated by roasted caramel with just a hint of black malt. Flavor is intense sweet, roasted caramel with some malt and bitter hops. The bitterness is obvious, but all the sweetness is pushing it into the background. There is some malt here and maybe some coffee as well, but the caramel is so dominate its difficult to detect any other flavors. The aroma and the two first sips is delicious, but then the whole thing just start to grow I my mouth and I really had a hard time to finish my half part of the bottle. Respect for Sothern Tier to make this creation, but I just have to admit this is not my kind of beer. Some people might love it, but this just becomes a struggle to me.

Clear dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is sweet, caramel, vanilla and milk chocolate - in short: Creme brulee. Flavor is very sweet and so is the finish. Very interesting, but after about half a beer the sweetness just becomes too much. It never ceases to amaze me how wide a range of flavors you can achieve with beer compared to wine. 040910

Smallish brown head. Just barely translucent deep dark red body. Intense vanilla fudge and buttery toffee aroma with roasty chocolatey notes. A real assault on the senses, this. Strong chocolatey vanilla fudge and butter taste with roasty toffee notes. Mild, smooth mouthfeel with considerable alcohol heat. Full-bodied, to say the least. Intense sugary toffee and vanilla fudge aftertaste with coffee and butter notes. A real extreme beer. A bit too extreme, perhaps. Small doses are great, but an entire 0.65l bottle is a bit much. (0.65l bottle, wine monopoly Vika, Oslo.)

Bouteille 650ml titrant 10% d’alcool.

Big bottle, 650ml, 10% ABV, carried back home from Vinmonopolet Vika in Oslo. Served comfortably chilled as recommended on the bottle. Next to black in body colour. Initial fawn coloured head rapidly reduced to just a shiny surface. Rather rich aroma of caramel pudding along with a roasted tint. Like drinking tiramisu with vanilla sweetness, burnt sugar, biscuit malts and amaretto. Very well masked alcohol. Velvet sweet on the swallow. Good sipper, but one big bottle was a bit too much of sweet dessert, especially since my wife did not like it and refused to share the bottle (Tromsø, 22.01.2011).

Very dark brown beer, practically opaque. Lighttane head that quickly dies away. Vanilla custard nose! Vanilla and indeed Creme Brulee in the mouth. An extraodinary tasting beer! Light and silky and sweet. Finishes with vanilla and burned toffee. Very slight bitterness in the aftertaste. Corking unusual beer!
