“a stout of great contention”
We are not the harbingers of truth as some may suggest but it may indeed be argued that our brewing philosophy is tantamount to a dessert with a bellicose past. How, you may ask, would a brewery determine a likeness to hard-coated custard? Our response is simple; it’s all in the power of history, and of course, the extra finesse needed to top off a contentious treat with definition.

Bottled. Dark color, medium off-white head. Aroma of vanilla, caramel, toffee, hint of coffee and chocolat. Overly sweet vanilla and toffee taste. Dry powdery finish. At first I thought it was a bit outrageous on the toffee and vanilla, but drinkable. But sip after sip it destroys your motivation to continue sipping. What a complete horrible experiment is this. Absolute drain-pour.

0.75l bottle. Pours a dark, almost black body with a quite thin beige head. From the moment you open the bottle the aroma of creme brulee really hits you big time! Lots of Bailyes and vanilla flavor fills the glass and you really want to taste it. Fully bodied with medium carbonation. Sweet as hell with burned caramel, vanilla, chocolate, roasted malts and surprise surprise, burned cream. No way I could drink more than 5 or 6 bottles of this in one evening.

Bottle from Beer Merchants. Drank on Christmas day. Black pour with a tan head. Sweet soothing aromas of coffee cake, caramel, chocolate ice cream and molasses. Heavy flavours of burnt caramel, chocolate and vanilla. Has a slight bitter edge. Malty, bitter-sweet finish. Heavy going especially after a serious Christmas dinner, nice though.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a tan head. Aroma is exactly like the dessert - vanilla beans, sweet burnt caramel, and hazelnuts. Flavour of vanilla beans, burnt caramel (more than the nose suggests), molasses and a bit of a roasty flavour - less sweet than the aroma would suggest, though still quite cloying. Thick palate - the sweetness becomes quite cloying after a while. Alcohol is well-hidden. All in all, enjoyable in super small quantities, though seems like a novelty more than anything.

650 ml bottle, as Southern Tier Imperial Crème Brûlée Stout, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 10.0%. Pitch black colour, big tan head. Intense aroma of crème brûlée and vanilla from the moment you open the bottle, amazing! The smell includes caramel, of course - but also chocolate and mild coffee. The sweet flavour is first and foremost crème brûlée again, but also roasty notes of strong coffee, dark bitter chocolate and liquorice. Also some hoppy bitterness in the finish. Warming mouthfeel. An incredible dessert beer!

At a tasting, thanks yk23, small dark brown head, dark dense brown colour with a hint of reddish hues, aroma of vanila pod, dark chocolate, irish cream, dark chocolate and moca, very strong flavour of strong roasted coffee, almost charred, very sweet chocolate cake and lots of brown sugar, feels a little sticky. Very good but a little over the top.

Bottle at a tasting. Thanks YK23. Black-colored with a beige head. Aroma vanilla, milk and some chocolate. Sweet flavor of vanilla, some roasted malt, Irish cream and chocolate. Full-bodied. I don’t like vanilla, so it’s a bit tough to drink for me.

On tap at Beer Temple. Good thing they serve this in 12cl samples. Black colour, brown head. Aroma of hopjesvla/toffee and vanilla/caramel fudge, some moccha hints. Flavour is overly sweet, milky, hopjesvla, vanilla, some roasted malts but almost no bitterness, alcohol. Medium to fullbodied. Just gross.

On tap @ Beer Temple - smell was detectable from afar - crème brûlee indeed! Very dark colored, creamy beige head. Smells sweet, strong vanilla aroma, mocha, hopjesvla. Taste is sweet, vanilla, somewhat roasted, milk chocolate. Not as thick as I expected, which was good, or it would have been too sticky. Somewhat dry finish and eventually a bit of roast a mild bitterness. Good dessert beer, but very sweet.

A sticky sweet mess. Loads of vanilla, molasses, caramelized sugars, toffee, chocolate throughout this one. I was able to pick out some light notes of smoke, cocoa, nuts, too, but boy, I just couldn’t get through the sweet mass of malts. Expertly brewed, just not my style. I could only get through about a quarter of a pint before I gave this one to my barstool neighbor.
