Amber ale with orange peel, grains of paradise & Coriander
Our take on the smooth, easy drinking ambers poured in cafés across Belgium, Rare Vos (Strange Fox) takes its name from a tavern near Brussels known for cycling contests, pigeon races and outstanding ales. Pouring a brilliant copper with a creamy white head, this bright, beguiling beer is sensational to session, and pairs wonderfully with mussels, frites and other pub fare.
Because at the end of the day, it’s good to enjoy the end of the day.

355ml bottle. Clear orangey golden to amber colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Grainy, strawy and slightly peppery, spicy yeasty aroma. Taste minimally sweet fruity, malty, yeasty; dry finish, lively carbonation. Not overly impressing.

Sampled from bottle @ The Hague Tasting. Hazy orange color, medium to full sized fair lacing white head. Smell and taste malts, lightly sweetish, slightly yeast. Very balanced, pretty nice. Medium body and carbonation. Very nice.

Tap at Dexters. Filtered orange-brown. Steady creamy off-white head. Sort of a mineral dryness that I attribute to the overcleaned lines at Dexters. A pretty nice Belgian Amber, some creamy herbal tones. Subtle, refined, balanced. Delicate cherry amber malt tones. Nice.

Bottle. Amber beer with a strong but soon disappearing head. The aroma is citrusy and yeasty, and the flavour is spiced, with some roasted burnt bitterness mixed with the Belgian style yeasty and citrus qualities. Overall a good strong Belgian style beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Amber with a large white head that quickly fades to a coat - yes, like a fox. Aroma is very fruity (plums, dried banana, oranges) and spicy with some brown sugar. Really quite weizenish fruit and spice. Fairly light bodied, highish carbonation. Light dough is there but really pretty clean. Full of sweet fruit and pepper, a little chocolate, citrus seems to disappear. Modest bitterness in a dry spicy finish (some coriander with the pepper). Started this at the recommended temperature of 5C, actually started liking it 8-10C. Strikes a nice balance between yeast character and clearly defined flavours.

33cl bottle from The Bottle Shop Canterbury. Clear deepish gold orange colour with lasting white head. Had to decant it to another glass to get rid of excess carbonation. Belgian yeast estery aroma, but a good estery aroma. Yep, I mean this is a Belgian Ale straight down the line, but a good one, full of flavour, good character. It’s a Belgian Ale, some toffee some malt, some hop. It’s very decent, very likeable very estery. Decent. Slightly peppery hop on end builds and is good. Clean, full and characterful. Decent hops on end. It’s a good beer what can one say.

Pint in Alfie’s on 9th Ave, New York on 18 Jan 2013: chalk board called it a ’Belgian style Amber’ with ’Rare Vos’ as an afterthought in brackets. Belgian style Amber it is though, very drinkable in deed. Slight cloud within the pour: light amber to dull gold in colour with a thinning white head on top. The aroma was a mixed bag of smells, yeast, corriander and malts in that order. The taste followed the smells too: add some grain feel into the blend, this was an easy drinking semi-sweet brew that I took too greatly: couldn’t have another though, too many others to try!
