Similar to Belgian-style Strong Pales, the Tripel is often characterized by its lighter color, spicy aromatics, and complexity. Brother David’s Triple is brewed with copious amounts of pale malts as well as Belgian candi sugar, giving it a deep golden hue, medium body and rich mouth feel. The dense head gives off aromas of candied orange peel, clover honey, pears, and a hint of freshly mown fields. The fruity esters and spicy hop flavors balance the phenolic characteristics leading to a peppery, citrusy finish.

Dark orange yellow with slight white head, full-bodied. Boozy and slightly fruity aroma. Peach sweetness to the taste fades as the beer warms, leading to more sourness and bitter aftertaste. Not a real Abbey tripel, just an OK beer.

Bottle. It pours a rich, deep golden orange color with a small white head. The aroma is pretty sweet and boozy with some alcohol, orange, marzipan, honey and light spicy yeast notes. The flavor is the same. Lots of alcohol, orange, honey, bread dough and a decent amount of spicy/fruity yeast in the finish. Very sweet and virtually no hop character. Not really my idea of a nice Tripel.

Bottle from On the Fly. Close, but no cigar. Everything right in the wheelhouse for the style, herbal and grassy notes, but nothing exceptional.

Bottle split at LKS HeIgHtS, thanks to Fergus, 21/04/15. Very lightly hazed golden with a moderate off white covering. Nose is caramel, grain, paper, straw, pretty basic aroma. Taste improves comprising caramel, light spice, prunes, vanilla, dates, light booze. Medium + bodied, fine carbonation, light warming booze in the close. So so affair, a very basic model lacking any depth or complexity.

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Fergus. Pours totally clear gold with a slight, foamy white head. The nose has so,e fusel notes, rich bread, rotting citrus, suggestions of butterscotch. Big sweet flavor with rich doughy malts, sugar, slight yeast, alcohol, hints of butterscotch. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sugary finish, a little boozy, with lots of doughy wheat bread. So so.
