To celebrate our 500th gyle, we made cake. And you're all invited to have a piece!

Parkin Cake is an Imperial Brown Ale brewed to replicate the Northern speciality Parkin, a traditional cake made with oatmeal, black treacle and ginger.

This 10% ABV treat has a complex malt base and was brewed with black treacle, dark muscovado sugar, ginger, allspice and nutmeg. It's rich and smooth with layers of sweet treacle and spice leading to a drying finish full of warming ginger.

Can at home, 14/10/18. Extremely dark mahogany brown with a decent beige cap that dissipates in time. Nose is ginger, clove, pumpkin, spice, biscuit, cinnamon, figs. Taste comprises parkin cake, brown sugars, spice, Jamaica ginger cake, pumpkin pie, treacle toffee, dried fruits, cake mix. Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a balanced rising boost. Fun beer ... not the kind of thing I'd normally take down a can of on my own but paired this with some strong cheeses and it worked well. Would revisit for sure.

Dark brown with no head. Aroma and flavour have a lot of sweet spices. Especially clove , ginger and cinnamon. Really smooth and rich texture. The smell is too extreme but the flavour is ok.

Almost clear deep - amber brown beer, tiny pale tan head. Smooth palate, a little dry, modest fine carbonation. Sweetish malts, traces of toffee and treacle. Sweetish cooling nutmeg and a trace of fruity ginger. Smooth finish. Hides the abv well but it's a spice herb veg beer for me, not a Brown.

Can. Mitchell’s Wines, Sheffield. Hazy, conker brown. Scummy, tan head. Nose has flat cola. Demerara sugar. Some ginger. Some cinnamon. Taste is super sweet. Some spice. Medium body. Doesn’t feel the ABV at all. Low carbonation. Sweet and sticky finish. Not great. In fact, it’s a bit of a sticky mess, that misses it’s target by a mile.

Draft at Unit 9. Pours cola brown with thin laced off white head. Aroma is ginger, cola, orange and rum spiced cake. Taste is a ginger spiced parkin cake, a little cola in there and some brown sugar. Pretty drinkable for 10%. Good stuff.
