Bottle @ home, acquired in a trade. Clear burnt orange appearance with a small, light brown head. Rich toffee, sweet caramel malty, a touch spicy, lightly piney, floral hoppy aroma. Spicy, piney hoppy flavor, mildly citrusy, rich caramel/toffee flavor. Thick, lightly syrupy, spicy, toffee finish. Pretty cool beer.

Refrigerated bottle poured into a glass. Pours amber/red with small off-white head. Pretty good lacing, light body, low carbonation, and strong hop aroma. Taste is caramel malt, some hops, and a hint of alcohol. Pretty well balanced, but not that great.

Bottle. Dark amber, tan head, good lacing. Aroma of brown bread and light spice. Taste has tons of malt but good balance. Nice.

Whole Foods, P St, DC 4-pack ($11): Pours an amber color with an off-white head. Aroma is piny floral hops with a substantial malt backbone. Taste is rather similar to an IPA or a double IPA. A very mild gooey sweetness is present. Substained hop bitterness and astringency. Nice bitter, yet still surprisingly mellow, aftertaste. A few slightly burnt notes. For a beer of this size, it drinks remarkably smoothly. All in all, this is good stuff (and as another rater noted, this is a whole lot better than their other fall seasonal, the Oktoberfest).

Beautiful ruby tinted deep copper coloured body with a thinnish strong tan head. Aroma of potent smells, including oak, peat, raisins, figs, plums, nuts, earth, scotch and a bit more malt than expected. Medium to Full-bodied; Potent roasty malt flavour at first with a good of fresh hops, some alcohol and tobacco notes at first, then with a very strong complexity of peat, smoke, nuts, earth, oak and more drying herbal flavours. Aftertaste is quite complex with all of the aforementioned tastes, some cognac and pine flavours and a deep, prolonged bitterness. Overall, a very nice and complex beer that settles well and shows perhaps more flavours than a barley wine. A nice and flavourful beer that goes well with special occasions. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased on 06-November-2010 from Siciliano’s in Grand Rapids, Michigan for US$2.39 sampled at home after visiting the Pentagon Memorial for the first time ever, on September 9th, 2011.

Draft at Dexters. Amber-brown with a thick, off white head. Sweet, mellow aroma. Pretty solid strong ale, with lots of malty depth. Soapy enough hop bitterness to take it out of the Scotch Ale designation, but still mellower than most big beers. Nutty, woody, brown sugar notes. Earthy. Sp,e fruity amber malt/ale yeast tones. Very well done, subdued.

Sampled 12/12/08 best by 12/03/08 Received in trade from Prototypic, thanks for the opportunity. Pours a beautifully clear red copper color with a smallish bubbly off white head that leaves mad lace on the way down. Smells of citrus, grapefruit, heavy hop aroma. Slight caramel in back if I strain my nose a bit. Taste is caramel malt up front, grapefruit and hops mid to finish and linger on for a bit. The taste isn’t as bitter as the aroma leads you to believe. Creamy oily mouthfeel, thick body, moderate carbonation. Great stock ale. Lots of hops but some malt to back it up.

Medium dark brown with a creamy tan head. Toasty caramel malts, light spice, earthy, and light hops in the aroma. Flavor is similar with the earthy malts, medium sweet caramel malts, grapefruit hops, and light bitterness on the backend. Really solid, full bodied beer. One of my favorite seasonals.

Clear dark brown beer. Rich and fullsome hops but they are well mannered. Plenty of unsweet marmaladey grapefruit. Dry and sumptuos. Just a little bitterness in the aftertaste. Nice.
