Milk stout with - naturally - lactose but also cocoa nibs and vanilla, from a craft brewery in Bristol, 44 cl can from Etre Gourmet. Very densely creamy, very thick, regular, membrane-lacing, yellowish mocha beige head crowning a hazy very dark ebony beer, almost black, but with chestnut brown-mahogany edges visible in the end. Aroma of toasted hazelnuts, black 'fondant' chocolate, clear and vibrant vanilla without being too overpowering, cocoa powder, raisins, old brownies, red apple peel, dried fig, diluted coffee grounds, 'blood'-like iron, subtler notes of salmiak, dry earth, black tea, margarine, cinnamon, dark green tree leaves and sweet pipe tobacco. Fruity, sweet onset, a crisp edge of red apple surrounding a fig- and date-like core, yet nothing sticky or overly sugary; refined, lively carbonation, smooth and full mouthfeel, feeling thicker than its ABV would suggest. Lovely toffeeish, chocolatey and sweet pecan-nutty maltiness with a light toasty-bitterish edge, made creamy and kept sweet and soft by the lactose yet still with a thin metallic (and blood-like) touch to it; the chocolatey aspect is enhanced by the cocoa nibs - something that does not always seem to work, but here it does. Vanilla adorns the finish in an aromatic, yet nowhere too dominant way, matching well with the cocoa and the malts, countered by a late, mildly spicy, bit herbal and even very distantly citric (Mosaic!) hop bitter accent that in itself merges with the toasty and black-chocolatey bitterness of the malts, without becoming too roasty. Smooth, full, creamy stout with a vague earthy note in the end, but constructed primarily around the play of lactose, cocoa and vanilla as promised, so in any case this beer does deliver what it advertizes. Very decent milk stout fully conceived in the modern American idiom rather than the original English form, a pleasant encounter with this to me hitherto unknown brewery. Wish I bought more from them.

Keg at Brewdog Camden, London. A black coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Roasty, malty, chocolate, vanilla aroma. Tastes slightly sweet, malty, chocolate, hint of coffee, vanilla. Very nice indeed.

Keg @ HoG. Pours dark with small tan head. Milky chocolate nose. Continues to taste with a gentle vanilla sweetness, ice cream, coffee roast hints. Pleasant.

Canned, from Honest Brew. Shared with Max and JFK10000. Black with beige head. Roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, smooth. Medium sweetness. Bit thin in finish. Medium bodied.

HL1 Keg. Opaque dark brown beer, decent pale tan head. Smooth palate, semi dry, reasonable.fine carbonation..Sweetish dark malts. Lots of esters. Tangy dry dark chocolate and mild tangy dark fruits. Okay.

Draft @ Taproom, Malmö. Pours a black color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty milk chocolate aroma. Roasted malty milk chocolate vanilla flavor. Has a roasted malty milk chocolate vanilla finish.
