Hopsteiner refer to the Denali hop as BIG, a monster of a plant with gigantic cones and an unusually high oil content. Perhaps that is why they renamed it from Experiment #06277 – which sounds a bit like a prisoner on death row. It’s now the more marketing-friendly Denali, the high one, after the Alaskan indigenous name for North American’s highest mountain, otherwise known as Mount McKinley.

It still is BIG, bursting with rich tropical citrus aromas and heavy on pineapple, with a touch of spice to boot. We are excited to showcase this new hop as part of our single hop IPA, or SHIPA, range.

Draught at ATG. Cloudy yellow with a medium head, good lacing. Aroma of chalky hop and fruit. Flavour is jam fruit, a little herb, tangy sugary finish, lingering bitterness.

Bottle from O'Brien's, Athlone [310817]
Dark amber, clear, frothy white head
Aroma - Very soft herbal hop nose, not getting any citrus at all, hint of caramel in the background, slight rubber tyre
Taste of bitter herbal hops, some spicy hops, hint of pine, dab of caramel in the background, no fruit
Palate - Soft carb, medium body, fairly bitter. Finish is quite dry, more bitter herbs
Overall - Didn't get the tropical fruits or pineapple as mentioned on the bottle at all, more a fairly herbal bitter hop. Not one of their best
