A Peaty as Hell Double Bastard Aged in Islay Scotch Whisky Barrels
Weakness Is worn on the sleeves. Boldness Is within the heart. This intensified blend of barrel-aged Double Bastard Ale is all heart baby. The weak will find it to be a telltale heart. It knows of your fallibility. It smells your fear. The heart of this beer disdains you, as it disdains all things homogenized, wimpy and uncultured. You do know the truth of yourself, no? If you hesitated to answer that, if even for a split second, that in and of itself is telling. If you aren’t capable of knowing the reality of yourself, this beer can and will take the responsibility of informing you of what you should already know. (And it you’ve lost your way in this text already and no longer are clear about what I am saying, your reading pace has exceeded your comprehension pace. Go back, slow down and start over, bright eyes.)
Take a deep breath. Let it out slowly. Evenly. Give yourself some positive affirmations. Breathe deep again. There. Feel better? If you followed those instructions, then set this bottle down and back away immediately, you new age poseur. Fight or flight and I’d recommend the latter for you, tiger. Wet paper bags are more your speed.

On tap at Stone Liberty Station, San Diego. Pours clear dark amber with off-white head. Malty, caramel, quite strong peat, smoke, leather, whiskey, some wood. Full bodied. Not easy to drink, wasn’t the best choice to finish the evening. Bit harsh, boozy, lacks balance, subtlety.

Bottle. Pours a clear reddish color with a small white head. A huge scotch whiskey nose. The flavor is big sweet hot scotch, phenolic. Not bad but not great.

Tap. Peaty as hell indeed. Wowe. Pours quite hazy chestnut, small beige head, decent lacing. Aroma is huge peat smoke. Huge. Flavors is huge smoke, peat, scotch. Holy shit. Medium body. Crazy over the top. Unruly. Fuck Trump.

Holy lord, like someone dropped a chunk of a flaming Laphroaig barrel into my Double Bastard. Peaty doesn’t quite cover it. Neither does smoky. Peat-smoke squared, maybe? I mean, we’re practically talking about a Rauchbier here. This beer’s a monster of old country Scotch aggressiveness, boozy and rich, leathery and sweet. Pour is pretty good-- massive head, no lacing--but the aroma’s right on cue for the description: Peaty As Hell. Starts whisky sweet, mostly toffee and burnt sugar, but the smoke starts in almost immediately, adding a leather-recliner-by-a-campfire depth to the taste. Grows oak-laden on the back end but never shakes the smoke, and finishes semisweet with a bracing peppery hop bite. Scary how well it hides the 13% ABV. Not normally a Double Bastard fan, but everything comes together with this brew. Delicious.

22 oz. bottle. Pours hazy, brownish orange, with a medium, creamy, beige head. The aroma is smooth caramel, orange peel, and distinct Laphroaig notes of bacon, tar, cigarette smoke, strong peat, and resin. Sweet and syrupy, with a strange, dank, weird bitterness. Heavy body, with a sticky, harsh mouthfeel. This is awful. I hate Islay scotch, and this is a giant peat bomb. I see why some would love it, but I had a hard time finishing this.

Shared bomber. Looks like the other Bastards, shiney red-brown with a medium head. IMHO, this is another beer that cannot be rated with a sample of a few ounces. My initial reaction when it hit my nose was, "WTF!" The peaty scotch blended with the Signature Bastard aroma, to my nose, was not pleasant. It’s looked around to see if my wife opened nail polish or something else nasty. The initial taste was okay, just okay. Peaty and malty as advertised. After the first few sips, I drank it with food that was a hot cheesy, sausage mix. With the conditioning of my palate and the food pairing, I really warmed up to this. My final thoughts: it is a nice single malt scotch with a Bastard chaser.

Draft at BitterCreek.Dark brown, small ring of head. Smoky, ashy aroma. Powerful. Taste is also big and bold. A sipper. Don’t know if I could drink a full pour. Good, but very strong.

Tap at Sidedoor. Pig peat smoke scotch aroma. flavor too. Pretty clean for the ABV, filtration helps a lot. Big and boozy, but not overly sugary. Has none of that extract feel. Very peat forward. Quite a memorable beer.

On tap at bitter Creek boise. Pours out a crisp amber topped with a sand head. Nose is so smoke peat to the max massive scotch and tons of booze. Taste is worse then the nose so much booze and peat. Lucky for me the waitress saved me before she got me a pour, she said can I get you a taste of this before you order a pour. This has not been well received from most she tells me. I will have to agree.

Keg at Stone RVA. This beer’s 50th rating. Hazy dark brown, large frothy tan head, good retention. Aroma of huge peaty smoke, toffee. Taste is toffee, peat, smoke, mildly fruity finish. Full bodied, lingering bitterness and smoke. Big beer, quite tasty.
