Cherry beer (‘kriek’) by De Vlier, made with the Schaarbeekse variant; 75 cl bottle shared by tderoeck, thanks Tim! Moussy, medium thick, pale pinkish-white head, dark and misty burgundy red with brownish tinge (like an old and oxidized red wine). Aroma of cherry wine, cooked cherries, almond from the cherry stones, red apple juice, rosé wine, cherry jam, candied figs, blackberry coulis, redcurrants, soggy white bread underneath. Packed with juicy black cherries in the mouth as well, very pure and fleshy, like a thick slush of pressed cherries, medium carbonated with smooth edges and bready core; side notes of plum, apple and blue grape too, further deepening the overall feel of vinous red fruitiness. Hints of almond and even vanilla play in the finish, while the sweet-with-sour-edge effect of the red fruit continues unabatedly; an earthy note does appear, but no true hop bitterness worth mentioning (and none expected either). The sheer sweetness of the Schaarbeekse cherries even overrules that edge of lactic acid here – as indeed lactic bacteria were effectively involved to create additional sourness. I was expecting something along the lines of Vesalius, another cherry beer made by De Vlier years ago, but this is very different: a thick, pure, fleshy juice of bursting-ripe cherries, generous and rich, one I can highly recommend if you are into ‘genuine’ and honest, old school Belgian fruit beers. Conveys the richness of Schaarbeekse cherries perfectly, in a non-lambic context.

7/I/22 - 75cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent), shared @ Wim VL’s place, BB: 1/V/2024, bottle: 1/V/2019 (2022-46)

Cloudy deep purple to ruby brown beer, small creamy pink to purple head, stable, non adhesive. Aroma: very yeasty, lots of ripe apples, some vanilla, apple juice, weird and funky touch, cherries, fruity. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bit fruity, pretty bitter, quite some tannins, bit oxidized. Aftertaste: tannins, cherry pits and peels, fruity, bitter, more tannins.
