Sussex Best is our most famous beer, a superbly balanced bitter with prominent hop character. The brew evolved over decades, satisfying the expectations of the people of Sussex and its adjoining counties. Finest Maris Otter malted barley is supplemented with a dash of Crystal malt for balance. Our hops are a blend of four different local varieties, to give a distinctive hoppy finish.

Warning! Early amateur rating! Dark bitter. Creamy and smooth with a mild tobacco taste. Not too bitter. Drinkable.
2011 note - wish I could remember where I had this because every one of these I have had since has been sulphury!

Cask at the Royal Oak. Almost clear amber beer. Light pale head. Light dry palate with mild fine carbonation. Light and unwelcome eggy note on the nose. Tangy malts, flirting with sour. Smooth but dry, Light bitterness. Whisper of dried fruits. It’s drinkable all right but barely passes muster. Kings new clothes and all that.

Cask at the Cleveland Arms. Pours amber with barely a film of white head. Has a nice malt aroma, with bread and fresh fruit. Flavor is sweet, biscuity, with a good bitter note. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Finishes clean and wonderfully balanced. Very good.

Cask@The Market Porter, London. I’ve always had a soft spot for this having lived in Sussex for a few years, and it really is a fine example of the genre. Some great hoppage and balancing malt. Clean, straightforward and emminently downable.

Cask at Dorset Arms, Withyham, E.Sussex. An amber coloured ale with a smallish head. Fruity, malty Harveys aroma. Fruity taste with some caramel/malt. Very well balanced and moreish. A nice end to a hot sunny day in the beautiful green countryside of East Sussex.

Med amber color. A touch of peaches and apples, but crystal malts are dominate. Hops shine in the mouth, but then fad quickly. Its all about the crystal malt. Hops linger, but no bitterness.
