Sussex Best is our most famous beer, a superbly balanced bitter with prominent hop character. The brew evolved over decades, satisfying the expectations of the people of Sussex and its adjoining counties. Finest Maris Otter malted barley is supplemented with a dash of Crystal malt for balance. Our hops are a blend of four different local varieties, to give a distinctive hoppy finish.

Nice amber coloured body with a medium-sized tan head. Aroma of mild malt, caramel and a little hops. Medium-bodied; Strong assertive malt up front with a backbone of caramel, alcohol and a tiny amount of hops. Aftertaste shows cardboard and a mild pit fruit flavour. Overall, a good beer - not amazing. I sampled this beer on cask I on cask at The Market Porter in Borough, London, England on 13-December-2008.

Cask (Guide Dog, Southampton) - Copper coloured. Lightly hoppy and fruity aroma. Hoppy and fruity taste with malt featuring. Well made and well balanced.

Cloudy amber with tiny white head. Sweet aroma with malty notes. Sweet fruity aroma with toasted malt, hops and hints of caramel. Good dry and bitter finish.

[on handpump at the Jolly Angler, Reading] Pours a deep amber brown with a moderate, lasting white head. Was slightly cloudy with a little sediment in the bottom, so I think it may have been getting near the bottom of the barrel, but appeared none the worse for it. Huge floral hops on the foretaste, followed by a deep, woody leaf-rot earthiness. Enormously bitter in the aftertaste. I wouldn’t normally like this much bitterness in a beer as I find it blots out the other flavours, but here the other flavours are strong enough to cope; it’s a superb, well-balanced bitter that I can thoroughly recommend.

Cask-conditioned at The Seven Stars, London WC2. Amber coloured with next to no head. Aroma was fruity with a touch of yeastiness. Easy drinking with flavours of sweet malt, more fruit and juicy hops. The finish was long and bitter. Good.

Cask@The Warf. Dark golden body with a thin, firm off-white head. Fruity, malty, caramel and bitter hop aroma. Flavor is smooth malty, well balanced bitter, fruity and some caramel finish. Very typical English bitter.

Clear amber coloured, small white head, odd spicy nose. Slight malty, fruity and nice hoppy aroma but rather ordinary english bitter.

From cask at Charlies, thanks to Hildigöltur. Pours clear and deep orange with a little lacing head. Vague hoppy aroma. Flavour is somewhat mouldy with a slight earthy tone. Finish is bitter and slight herbal. Decent.

Cask (at the Royal Oak): Amber, small, but lacing white head, the nose is dominated medical, herbal hops, shy fruity malt in the edges, moderate dry bitter flavour, light bodied, lingering medical-bitter finish. O.K., could be a bit better balanced.......
