Sussex Best is our most famous beer, a superbly balanced bitter with prominent hop character. The brew evolved over decades, satisfying the expectations of the people of Sussex and its adjoining counties. Finest Maris Otter malted barley is supplemented with a dash of Crystal malt for balance. Our hops are a blend of four different local varieties, to give a distinctive hoppy finish.

Amber color with a fine off white head. Good lacing. Nice mixed aroma with caramel, mild citric, hoppy and fruity. Medium (light) body and a soft carbonation.Flavour are also more powerful than a ususal British bitter at a pub. Caramel/toffee, mild citric and fruity. A really pleasant session ale.

Hand-pulled pint at the brewery owned ’Royal Oak’ Borough, London on 11th Sep 2014. Really disappointed to be honest, I have had this beer at two other London pubs (White Horse, Parsons Green and The Harp, Chandos Place) and thought it a great pint: today however it was not right in any way. Almost flat and stale, should have taken it back to the bar I suppose. Wish I could have rated the previous pints, but history is history and the beer I am rating was poor. Hope to rectify this score next time I visit the South.

Cask in a traditional English pub near Waterloo Station in London. Creamy, stable head, thin and dense as can be expected from the style, warm and pretty, hazy copper colour. Malty character, caramel, walnuts, some restrained fruitiness (peach, figs), creamy mouthfeel, soft carbo, long peppery hop bitter finish. Totally mainstream but very enjoyable especially in its ’natural environment’.

Cask @ Savannah Cafe Bar, Haywards Heath. Clear orange to lightly amber color, small off-white head. Smell and taste malts, lightly caramalts, decently bitter. Average body and carbonation.

Cask @ GBBF 2014. Smooth malty beginning. Easy to drink, but still deeper. Nice malt character with smooth ale aroma. The aftertaste is smooth, not too bitter, nice malty ale-aroma. Nice beer!

No head, just some bubbles. Aroma is strange, sulfur, weeds, wet grain, grass, sour socks, popcorn, minerals, hay. Taste is slightly grassy, weeds, hay, wet grass, paper, light malts, minerals. Medium to longlasting bitterness, dry harsh and watery mouthfeel. Meh!
