Sussex Best is our most famous beer, a superbly balanced bitter with prominent hop character. The brew evolved over decades, satisfying the expectations of the people of Sussex and its adjoining counties. Finest Maris Otter malted barley is supplemented with a dash of Crystal malt for balance. Our hops are a blend of four different local varieties, to give a distinctive hoppy finish.

Cask - Light toffee and nutty notes, with some toast. Clear copper with no head. Light malts and caramel. Boring, but very drinkable.

Clear amber colour, white head. Earthy aroma, light hops, light butter. Quite sweet malty flavour, light bitter. Finish caramel, malts. Rather nice.

Cask @ White Horse, Parsons Green. Pours amber with malty aroma. Decent session bitter with caramel, malt, brown bread and classic English hops.

Cask at the George, Croydon. It pouts hazy deep amber with a small white head. The nose is wood, earth, toast, caramel, brown bread, and dirt. The taste is toasty, earth, leather, orange peel, caramel, pine, varnish, brown bread and dried fruits with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Good depth for the style. Update - have quaffed this many times since the original rating and I can’t help but love it.

Cask at the Barley Mow, Englefield Green, 06/11/13. Clear copper amber with a thin off white covering that leaves the building. Nose is dark fruit, toffee, wild yeast notes, biscuit crumble. Taste comprises tangy fruit, yeast, light brett, straw, earhty. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, dry bitterness in the finale. Decent and pretty unique bitter.

Served in a tall pint glass, has barely any head and a middling brown body. Flavour is all malt, rather drinkable and simple, with a wet finish. I couldn’t pick this one out of a crowd if you paid me.

Cask @ Old Sun, Harlington. A shade lighter than chestnut brown. Slightly sour aroma, raw wood, a tad astringent. Very bitter/sour taste. Complex at first but uncompromising bitterness takes over.

Cask at the royal oak in borough. Copper colour with a dense cream head that fades to a persistent whisp. Aroma is caramel and toffee malt. Some flowery hop in the nose as well. Flavour is nutty cara malt solid English yeast esters. Firm grassy bitterness. Little bit of sweet and sour going on with the sweet cara malt and sour yeast? Flavour. I was told that this beer has Brett character but I can’t detect it too overtly.
