Bottle. It's rather dark for a quadrupel, more or less black in color, with a minimal sized dark beige head sitting on top. Sort of oily. There's a good dash of alcohol on the nose, no wonder considering the ABV, but it's of a pleasant vinous kind, not that unpleasant boozy kind. Woody notes too, from the barrels, but it's not really white wine-ish. Toffee, dark chocolate, prunes, dates, some cocoa and brown sugar too. It's full-bodied, warming and super-smooth on the palate, some bitterness balancing the sweetness. The flavor gives pretty much the same impression as the aroma, it's big and beautiful, with lots of darkness. Prunes, figs, toffee, cocoa, some roasted malt notes, brown sugar and ripe sweet cherries. Some wood too. Quite vinous finish that lasts forever. A truly beautiful beer, well suited for sharing, but also damn fine drinking alone. 200901

Aroma is dark roasted malts with dark bread, chocolate, molasses and sweet licorice, as well as prunes, dark berries, tannins and wine barrels. Creamy body with a velvety mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Flavour is sweet malty notes with coffee, molasses and sweet licorice, as well as dark berries, tobacco, tannins and wooden barrels.
