Poured a clear golden brown almost copper colour with a thin broken tan head. The aroma was of treacle and very strong. The flavour was bitter with malt and caramel. The palate had some metallic bitterness. A satisfying winter ale. Serve warm!

Bottle from Star Grocery in Berkeley, CA. Pours dark copper with a creamy off-white head. Aroma of mild roast malt with a brisk floral/citrus hop accompaniment. Med body or better. Flavor is fruit, floral and there’s some citrus. Maybe a little earthiness lingering below. It’s quite fresh and tasty. Finishes towards dry, towards bitter, and full of flavor. Yummy stuff.

Gravity cask at the Bree Louise. Pours clear, golden-brown with a weak head. Toasty malt nose with some leather and light brown sugar. Mild sweet finish, some dirt, leaves and earth. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Faint ripe fruits in the finish, more dirt and leaves. OK. It’s just pretty average stuff.

500 ml bottle. Pours a nice orange, copper color topped by a huge rocky beige head. Toasted malt nose hints at toffee and buttery biscuits. Lightly carbonated, smooth caramel malt flavor with floral hops in the first sip. Nice balance with some peppery hops and complex maltiness in the finish. A good representive example of the English ESB style.

Brown 500ml bottle, best before 8th Apr 2009, drank 2nd Feb 2009. Poured into a straight UK pint glass. Dark, deep amber, a browny red colour. On top sat a good firm light tan coloured, foaming head. The head fell away to a thin covering and some lacing around the glass. The aroma was all about hops and toasted malts, also in the smell I picked up some woody and nutty hints. Hops and the aforementioned toasted malt dominated the flavours in the taste, with the hops taking centre stage. The hops also take over the aftertaste, which makes the beer fairly bitter tasting towards the end of the mouthfeel. One of the hoppiest UK beers I’ve ever had.

Cask-conditioned at the Wellington, Horfield 15/02/2012. Medium brown with a slight, off-white head. Berry fruit and caramel aroma with a touch of leafy hop. Flavour had more sweetness, some bready malts and a decent bitter finish. Enjoyable on a winter evening.
