Swordfish ale is a unique blend of Wadworth beer and Pusser’s Navy Rum (rationed to the Navy during WWII) with an ABV of 5%, perfect for those who like to enjoy something a little different.
It was originally brewed to support the 100th year anniversary of the Fleet Air Arm, but is now available all year due to its incredible popularity.

500ml bottle from M&S in Chelmsford near the railway station. I guess this is the Pussers Spearfish beer from the JDW festival, but in pasteurised bottle form. Chestnut colour with lasting beige head. Pasteurised darkish malt aroma. It’s a pasteurised dark English bitter. Still can’t tell where the rum is in the same way I couldn’t with the cask version. Some hop on finish.. Less good than the cask version unsurprisingly.

Bottle from my mate Wiggy. Deep amber pour with a white head. Very sweet aromas of molasses, citrus and bubblegum. Very sweet taste. Banana, brown sugar and a little light citrus. Malty, dry finish. Unusual.

500ml bottle. Pours amber with a medium frothy head. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel, vanilla and mollasses, seems slightly artificial. Sweet mollasses start. Lots of caramel on the finish with hints of rum.

Bottle. A clear, amber beer with a small, beige head. Bready, toffee nose with dried fruits, some fresh fruits. Some spiced, peppery notes. Coriander seeds? Medium body, a bit flat and dead. Slightly bready flavor, toffee and a buttery touch. A spiced bitterness chimes in towards the end, but it can’t prevent it from being a bit dull and uninteresting. Drinks easily. 101008

50cl bottle from M&S Camberley. Pours copper coloured with an off-white head; aroma of cane sugar and perhaps a touch of rum; rich, raw, sugary taste, almost bitter with molasses; and a heavy malty finish. This doesn’t really work for me.

Bottled. An amber beer with an orangey head. The aroma has notes of fruit, malt, and caramel, as well as lighter notes of bread. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, elderflowers, and bread, leading to a dry and lightly metallic finish.
