Dark cherry ale
A robust malt bill lays the foundation for the complex strong ale. We say “English Strong Ale” but we made it our own. A blend of Canadian and German malt, some oats for body and just a whisper of smoked malt to accentuate the cherries. English and American hops (Bramling Cross and Crystal) bring woody and earthy notes. Fermented with an English yeast strain then conditioned on cherry puree.
The intention was to boost and balance the natural malt and dark fruit esters of this English style. Conditioned on sweet and tart cherries, Velveteen gives flavours of dried mulberry, freshly toasted granola and bright red fruit.
Rich and malty yet bright and refreshing. Comforting. Let this beer warm up to let the flavours shine.

Velveteen was initially released in bombers in February of 2020.

On tap at Steel & Oak, pours a cloudy dark amber with a small white head. Aroma brings out gently tart cherries upfront, toasted caramel, and bready malt. Flavour is moderately sweet, with bready malt, toasted caramel and a hint of cherries. Nice cohesion — wouldn't think it'd work to add cherries to an English strong ale, but it works alright. Good.

Amber-brown and hazy. Bubbly. Sweet, light fruity character, soft body, malts are lightly sugary.

Pours a muddy brown with modest foam, smells of soft malt and a hint of cherry, sort of a pale ale vibe I'm getting with a bit of fruit. Flavour is deep malt, biscuit, and very soft cherry hints. Mouthfeel is full and good. The cherry is there but much more subtle than I would expect and I think it would do well to push it forward a little. Otherwise, a perfectly satisfactory saturday afternoon beer.
