"A smooth, creamy ale." Introduced in 1994 as a 4.8% Irish Ale by Bass at Caffrey’s Ulster brewery, and promoted strongly with an advertising campaign of "strong words softly spoken". Interbrew took over in 2000, soften the recipe and attempted to catch the lager market, using a new promotion of "a storm brewing". Coors acquired the brand in 2002. Initially contract brewed by Interbrew for Coors at Ulster, the brand eventually moved to Coor’s Tower Brewery in Tadcaster.

Canette 440ml. De couleur ambrée et claire. Nez de grains de malt, moyen de pain frais, léger de houblon herbeux avec des petites notes de caramel ainsi que de faibles traces métalliques azotées. Mince en bouche avec un pétillement bas ainsi qu’une texture moyennement crémeuse azotée et légèrement aqueuse. Léger goût de grains de malt accompagné de faibles notes azotées accompagné de faibles traces fruitées (pelures de pommes vertes) lors de l’entrée en bouche auquel se rajoute rapidement un moyen-léger goût de pain ainsi que des petites notes de caramel doux aux traces rôties puis en finale l’on retrouve une très légère amertume de houblon herbeux (herbes fraîches et mouillées) aux notes florales. Post-goût court, composé de notes amères de houblon herbeux.

440ml nitrocan at 4%. Pours orange with a large nitro head. Aroma is sweet and soapy caramel. Taste is nothing, a tiny bit of soapy malt. Flat as hell.

Can from the Coop in Cheriton on way home on a Friday night. Blimey it’s been a bit of time since I’ve had this beer. And a bit of time since I’ve had a widget can of beer too. I used to drink these all the time, Boddingtons, Guinness, Guinness Bitter, stuff I can’t even remember. Boy that was all 20 years ago. Where did the time go? Clear pale brown colour with a thick cream head. Sickly caramel malt aroma. Not attractive at all. My god, this is terrible. I mean really just laughable. I used to like this? I mean I would drink Caffreys in a pub in Liverpool a couple of times. That aroma is pathetic it really is. Then a kind of unbrewed out syrupy caramel malt in the mouth. No hops at all of course. Quite one of the most pathetic beers I think I’ve ever had. And what makes it worse is that there are no faults in terms of diacetyl, skunking or anything else, this beer is actually supposed to TASTE like this!! My god. I feel sorry for the quality control who have to drink this everyday. Poor bastards. Shocking. Nope, I can’t even finish the 440ml can. That is a drain pour.

Warning! Early amateur rating! Smooth palate. Creamy malt - a little rich. Some mild hop. Actually not too bad - was slightly better on Draft.

Originally rated February 2005. Caffrey’s Premium Draught poured an amber colour with a very nice cascade-effect. The slightly off-white head was creamy and had long and thick retention. The nose is very faint, not much going on except grain malt. Taste is very, very smooth with a light bitter aftertaste. Also some sweet malt. I remember this beer tasting a bit more when bought at a bar on Draught. Still a great brew.

Pale orange-brown colour. A disc of dense white foam sits atop the beer but seems like a totally separate component. It’s smooth, creamy and refreshing with a mild bitterness. Not a patch on the 90’s version which was 4.8% and much richer and intensly flavoured.

nitro tap at Niall’s in Stirling, Scotland - Pours light amber with a long lasting head and has a minimal malt aroma. The taste is lightly bitter but led by sweet, creamy malt. It’s light bodied and overall a decent brew if kind of bland.
