500ml bottle on 25th Sep 2015 during a random tasting evening with myself. Clean amber body, off-white head that didn’t start deep and soon turned into a wisp and collar. Malty brew and semi-sweet in nature. Not got an 80 Shilling depth of flavour or body texture compared to what I remember when living up in Morayshire in the 1980’s but enjoyable all the same.

July 2008: Dark brown 500ml bottle, caught just before it went out of date (in three weeks). Poured into my new La Chouffe glass two and a half times. Deep, clear mahogany colour with a good foaming slightly off-white head. Looked good to me. A real chocolate aroma to it and some toasted caramel with a coffee hint too. Rich roasted malt flavour, the chocolate, caramel and coffee in the aroma are not so prominent, but they are present in the taste. This isn’t a creamy thick beer, but nor is it a wishy washy thin one. It is just about right. Impressed, this is good and an ideal winter drinking beer, even at the low 4.1%, it punches well above its alcohol weight.

On cask at the Jolly Botanist. Appearance - light amber with a decent head. Nose - toffee and brown malt. Nuts. Taste - more of the same. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - solid but not special.
Earlier Rating: 6/19/2011 Total Score: 2.3
50cl bottle. Pours a chestnut colour with a decent head. The nose has malt and burnt raisins. The taste has more burnt raisins and malt. The palate is medium in structure and texture and it does not clean at the end at all - there’s a horrible lingering burnt malt note. Overall, this strangely tastes better the more you drink - something to do with numbing the taste buds.
