Armada Ale was one of the first new 'Golden Ales' that emerged in the 1980s. It has a pronounced yet balanced hop character, derived from Fuggle and Golding hops. Originally commissioned by the National Maritime Museum, it quickly established itself as a piece of living history. Robust, refreshing and still a port of call in any beer-drinker's voyage of discovery.

Bottle from Harvey’s. It pours clear pale gold with small bubbly white head. The nose is toasty, grainy, straw, earth and bread. The taste is lightly bitter, grainy, straw, watery, pithy lemon, grassy, musty and bread with a short, dry finish. Light body and low carbonation. Pretty light, earthy and musty. Nowhere near as good as the cask version. Meh.

Hand-pulled pint in the brewery owned Royal Oak, Borough, London. The Sussex Best Bitter was very poor on my visit on 11th Sep 2014 so I got my little party this next: it was in worse condition if anything. Really disappointed with the cask quality and i should have taken every beer I bought back to the bar, but others around us seemed to be drinking their pints. This rate will be altered (hopefully) on my next trip to London although I doubt my wife, son and his father-in-law will ever venture into a Harvey’s pub ever again.

Cask @ GBBF 2014. Smooth fresh beginning. The mainpart has caramel, smooth malt, nice fresh hops but sadly not such a nice ale character. The aftertaste is smooth, fresh. Malt, slightly bitter, caramel with hints of earthy bitterness. Fresh, hoppy bitter and caramelly malty aftertaste that stays relatively long on the tongue!

Small offwhite creamy head. Slightly hazy paleish amber body. Faint floral barnyard aroma with resiny notes. Sweet-acidic funky earthy taste with apple notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, flat mouthfeel. Dryish caramelized sugar and apples aftertaste with floral mineraly notes. Totally unusual, but nice. Highly drinkable. (0.237l cask at Charlie’s Bar, Copenhagen.)
