Coal Porter is our answer to Covent Garden’s favourite drink, porter. Smooth caramel with smoky tones, the black inky depths are as contrasting & ivory, there’s a tune in every mouthful. A great drink to enjoy with mates or when you’re on your on Jack Jones. This dark beer was a big favourite last year. Coal Porter’s neither a bitter nor a mild. It’s just right.

Classic English porter. Lots of blackcurrants and leather and prunes. Silky long finish of velvet and English summer fruits. Well made.

Bottle from Wine Yard, Swanage. Aroma of black coffee and berries with a dose of malt. Dark and glossy. Thick foamy tan head. The taste matches the aroma - initial medium bitter with a tangy sour berry edge. Into the finish you get the malts coming through. Light. Watery. Fizzy carbonation. Dry quietly astringent finish. Just doesn't quite do for me. Competent enough but that's it.

Cask at the Alehoue, Reading. A dark mahogany pour with a ring of cream head; tarry aroma with some licorice; caramel taste with some purple fruit and licorice; then a long dry finish with more licorice and a touch of ammonia.
