Münchener Dunkel in the most classic sense of the word - coming from Bavaria, between Ulm and Augsburg. The oldest style of lager in the world, a style one does not encounter all too often anymore, thanks Glenn for bringing me this from the Munich airport as part of a sixpack of local beers. Medium thick, pale greyish off-white head, leaving a regularly shaped, moussy edge and some thin patches in the middle, cristal clear bronze-brown robe with amber hue, in between amber and actual dark, with some tiny bubbles rising up here and there. Aroma of moist hazelnut shells, damp kitchen towels, wet dog, old caramel candy, raw green cabbage (as in: overly clear pasteurization), dry manure (FFF - even ’slurry pit’), burnt brown sugar, cold tea, sewer water, brown beans, vague minerals and iron, the latter becoming more pronounced as it warms up. Neutral onset, minerally with medium carbonation, a tad chalky, some vague dried fruits far away, tea-ish accents, lightly nutty malt middle with a gently bittering toasted edge but in all remaining very soft and subdued, subtly sweetish caramel touch. Toasted aspect is a bit more outspoken in the finish, with a clear metallic edge to it; some herbal, tea-like hops provide a soft, primarily structural background bitterishness. Minerals go down along with a thin flavour of bittersweet malts upon swallowing. Straightforward, easily drinkable, quenching brown Lager - classic Dunkel in that respect, and the original qualification ’Münchener’ can be used here as justly as in e.g. the much more famous Altbayrisch Dunkel from Schönramer, often regarded as the most authentic surviving example of this primordial Lager style. Correct and true to its heritage, but this offensive slurry pit-like odour kept bothering me from beginning to end, and the metallic aspect is a bit much here as well, so this to me is clearly of lesser stature than the aforementioned archetype of the style.

Würzig dunkler Antrunk, süßlich herb. Brotig, milder Mittelteil. Später wird das Bier schokoladig, geringfügig röstig, was sich aber im Nachgeschmack verstärkt. Hier auch süßer als zuvor. 9/10/11/10/8/9

Bottled, from biershop-bayern.de. Clear mahogany, rich head. Fruity nose with some caramel. Medium bodied with clean, firm nouthfeel. Dryish with more sweet malt in a finish with low bitterness.
