Cask, third pint at Mr Foley’s in Leeds. Creamy, tan-coloured head blanketing the glass. Almost black in body appearance. Caramel and liquorice on the nose, semi-dry. Dark chocolate, wood and caramel flavours. Soft on the swallow. Appreciated (08.07.2014).

Cask-conditioned at the Gryphon, Bristol 1/3/2014. Jet black with a slight, off-white head. Big chocolate notes throughout, some toastiness and a dryish finish. Very good.

Bottle from Booths. Very dark, no head. Has lots of chocolate malt in the nose and a light smattering in its taste, all in a fine body. Also tried the cask version at the Wetherspoon Spring Beer Festival 2025, although this was to make up a third as opposed to being a fest brew. Less stated in this instance but better looking.

Medium beige head doesn’t last. Nearly opaque black body goes deep dark brown at edges. Roasty dusty chocolate aroma with toast notes. Dry-sweet roasty chocolatey earth taste with toast and toffee notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dry roasty chocolatey honey aftertaste with earthy rye crisp bread notes. Lovely. Highly drinkable, full of flavour, and complex. Very harmonic, too. (0.5l bottle, from House of Trembling Madness, York.)

Cask @ Haymarket, Edinburgh [200312]
Very dark brown, ruby red edges on glass, thin tan head, good lacing
Aroma of soft roasted malts, hint of chocolate, bit of coffee
Taste as aroma, dark malts, soft roast, some mocha coffee, only hint of chocolate
Palate - Medium body, good mouthfeel. Finish has some soft bitter coffee.
Overall - Not getting much chocolate, still a fairly good stout. Best named just ’York Stout’
