Taru Ichi | 樽一 (meaning: first barrel), our first barrel aged beer to be released in package, has been over two years in the making. On its face this beer features a calculated blend of fresh smoked beers with a base of Godspeed-Style Porter aged for the duration in bourbon barrels. Pouring jet black with cola-like highlights, an immediate wave of bourbon character will flood the senses before the beer strikes the bottom of your glass. Oak-char, tobacco, black forest cake, leather, and an approachable booziness enhance the aroma before hints of cocoa and dates come to the forefront as it warms. This beer is built for contemplation and enjoyment, today or in the many years to come.

Can from the brewery. Jet black pour, with a small brown head. Intense roast in the aroma, burnt sugars, soy, dark fruit, and woody, earthy barrel. Mouth feel is light for the style with an oiliness, and a soft carb. Medium bitterness, semi sweet roast, great barrel notes and dark charred coffee. Excellent stuff.

Tasting at Brian's, can
Dark brown colour, near black. Aroma of dark malts, touch of burnt wood, also some sourness. Lean body, soft mouthfeel, it has a light amount of sweetness; moderate burnt wood, the acidity is quite high, and I can't really think of bourbon; some booze.

12oz (thx, Kory V.!) on Brian's deck. Appearance: dark brown with a tan head. Aroma: smoky, roasted malts, slightly fruity. Taste: roasted malts, inky, a bit sweet, some green apples acidity. Overall: ok, not sure why people would go crazy about it in ON, there are definitely much more nicer beers out there in the province.

355mL can, pours black with a small beige head. Aroma is smoky in an unusual way, with a little cola, some bourbon, and wood. Flavour is very barrel-heavy, with loads of fairly low-quality bourbon, a little smoke, and a touch of cola. A little jagged -- the bourbon character isn't the best, and there's not the best integration. There's a touch of acidity, and the mouthfeel is extremely thin. Not so good.

Can: Poured a black color ale with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and light lacing notes. Aroma of roasted malt notes with some bourbon and woody notes with light warming alcohol notes. Taste is a mix of roasted malt notes with some bourbon notes, woody notes with a slightly dry bitter finish. Body is about average for style with good carbonation. Enjoyable and glad to be reminded of what barrel-aged beers can taste like without adding a ton of sugar or adjunct.
