Bottle, first edition, 37,5cl. Color: Slightly hazy golden, white head. Quite a lot of tiny carbonation bubbles going up in the glass. Aroma: Tart, hay, fruity, funk. Taste: The taste is fairly sour, lemon / citrus, Sweet and sour white berries, hay, some wet grass and horse blanket-like wild yeast funk. Some oak and a slightly dry mouthfeel. Old hops, mainly in the finish. Medium body, just below average carbonation. A nice newcomer to the world of the Oude Geuzes. Maybe still a bit young now, I'm curious how this beer will develop in the coming years.

375 ml. bottle split by 3. Sparkling, strong brett going almost bit too dirty in nose but great farm funk in back, oak, brett, lively, lemon, zest, barnyard, so much better than expected. Impressive start.

Pierwsze geuze od nich. I bardzo udane. Duzo owocowosci (kwasne jablka, cytryna, agrest), dzikosc na razie grzeczna, w tle troche beczkowe chyba, drewniane nuty, moze ciut yyy... korkowosci? W uscie spora kwasnosc, spora rzeskosc, ciut tanin, ciut cierpk

A long anticipated newcomer on the traditional lambic and geuze scene - Den Herberg, originally a quiet brewer of old-fashioned Belgian ales, has received a lot of international attention in recent years thanks to their lambic, a project now culminating in this first attempt at 'oude geuze'. Bottle from Huis van de Geuze, 37.5 cl with cork and sober label. Lots of smoke rises up from the bottle neck upon opening, but not a trace of gushing. Off-white, irregularly shaped, mousy, medium thick, open and thinning but edge-retaining head, misty deep orange-hued peach blonde robe with disparate but lively sparkling. Aroma of freshly cut sorrel leaves, old lemons, dry earth, old dusty cupboards, old books, bitter garden weeds, green apple, unripe gooseberries, grass silage, dry straw, sawdust and - dixit my girlfriend - flies that have drowned in the lambic. Crisp and fizzy onset, lovely 'champenoise' sparkling making lots of estery impressions flutter around, green plums, green grapes and green apples but also redcurrant and even sweetish peach somewhere, sour and drying acidity but nowhere harshly vinegary, instead a lovely and well-measured lactic tartness stretches through the whole, carrying this 'spritzy' green fruitiness onwards over a pleasantly rounded bready malt 'soil'; clear woody tannins in the end as well as mild hay- and barnyard-like funky Brett effects, but this crisp, 'unripe' and green fruitiness remains key, acting very refreshing and even slightly citric. Some old hops provide background structure in the finish - but remain all but undetectable to the taste buds, so that this geuze does not end bitter, but rather vinous, 'mals' and utterly fruity, with these Brett effects adding complexity. Wonderfully balanced, supple geuze, remarkably mature for a first attempt. Very promising for the future - I am most impressed.

Good off-white head over (cold) hazed orangey beer. Classic horseblanket, rhubarb, unripe raspberries, gooseberry, saddlesoap, mild Bretts. Mild 'malse' gueuze as it ought to be, tantalizing hints at sweetness of young lambic, Petit Beurre cookies with fresh lemonjuice and horseblanket/farmyard notes. Lipsmacking acidity, some acidthinning not making it lean, very light dry-out effect. Long lasting main flavour. Excellent! And this for the first real gueuze by the 'new' brewery!
