Bottle from Yamaoka. Always excited to get a new one of these. Massive, fruity, estery, spicy nose. Peaches, melon, lemon, orange, apple, strawberry, rice, koji, noble hops. Like a cross between a huge heller bock and a junmai. Deep, dark golden orange, clear, with lace. Sweet and strong and hugely fruity, melon, peach, orange, apple, light vanilla, lightly nutty, a touch of strawberry gummy bears and pineapple, hugely complex. It tastes like a beer overall, and not a sake, but there is certainly a big sake influence. This one, using karakuchi junmai koji, has come out strong and dry, the way i really like it, as some are just a bit too sweet. This is certainly sweet with honey notes but overall finishes quite crisp and almost, if not exactly, dry. Slightly heavy and muted finish. Big body. This year, again, it seems to be the leading sake-influenced craft beer in Japan.
