Blend of different sours by Oedipus, created at and for Carnivale Brettanomyces 2017; from an unlabelled 75 cl bottle shared by Leopold of Brouwerij ‘t Verzet, cheers man! Medium thick, snow white, mousy, lightly lacing, opening head on a hazy, deep pure yellow-golden robe with pale greenish tinge. Aroma of sour apples, lemon zest, sour yoghurt, clear ‘oaky vanilla’, green banana peel, bee wax, whitecurrant, old potato chips, green pear, grass, unripe plum. Crisp, fruity onset, nicely sour with an astringent edge, teeming with green apple, grape skin, sour berries and unripe stonefruit with a whiff of sweet pineapple, medium carbonated; supple body, white-bready core dried by the overall lactic and very fruity sourness but also by an increasing tannic effect, ending very woody and dry, with that fruity acidity still bringing a relieving, quenching, refreshing effect. More than just a random hodgepodge of leftovers, this is actually a very cleverly blended sour, combining depth and woody nobility with ‘youthful’ crispness and playful tartness in spite of being three years old at this point (and thus dating from before Heineken took a share in this brewery). Interesting one.
