440ml can. Clear, chestnut colour with ruby shimmer and average, thick, firm, frothy to creamy, slowly osteoporosing, minimally lacing, off-white to beige head. Spicy malty, minimally fruity hoppy aroma, a touch of toffee, caramel, dark fruit, plum. Taste is sweet-ish and spicy malty, minimally fruity hoppy, notes of caramel, toffee, some rye spiciness, a touch of red berries and plum. Slightly creamy texture, smooth and soft, minimally cloying palate, soft carbonation. Well balanced, decent spiciness - nice.

Can 440ml (Beergium)
Dark ruby-amber colour, small beige head. A bit spicey, bready, caramalty aroma. Light to medium-bodied. Spicey bitterness over sweet caramalt and ryeish breadyness. Quite malty. Not too far from American Red Ale.

Anglo-Saxon style amber ale from a craft brewer in Northamptonshire, with rye (so indeed a 'rye ale') hopped with classic Willamette (basically ennobled Fuggles so with a 'noble hop' profile) and modern Australian Ella. Can (44 cl) from Beergium. Thick and mousy, papery lacing, egg-white, quite stable head slowly breaking in the middle, initially clear and beautifully deep, pure, reddish amber robe with some 'funnels' of tiny bubbles rising up from the bottom, turning misty coppery with sediment - and with the head having become more dense, regular and creamy by that point, a beautiful beer to look at. Aroma of soggy peanuts, rusk, dried apricot, bread crust, freshly cut bitter herbs but also old dusty 'herbes de Provençe', pink grapefruit flesh, persimmon, brown soap, green banana, minerals, spiced cookie dough, star anise, nutmeg. Sweetish, clean onset, restrained in fruitiness but gently hinting at green banana, unripe peach and persimmon, lively carbonated with lots of minerally aspects but not to the point where they distract from the actual flavour; smooth, bit soapy, rounded mouthfeel, quite 'full' for its strength. Peanutty, bread-crusty and soaking wet rusk-like maltiness with indeed a spicy rye component, aromatized by the hops, which provide retronasal impressions of drying orange peel, jasmin blossoms and grapefruit flesh as well as something herbal (lemonbalm, 'herbes de Provençe') - plus a drying, spicy, slightly grapefruity bitterness in the finish, connecting with the (much more dim) spicy effect of the rye. Some bready and dried fruit notes linger, but the whole remains relatively 'clean' and focused on balancing the malts and the hops. Notable soapiness lingers too. Nice modern quencher, an American style amber ale in all, but with light fruity-yeasty and malty notes not far removed from traditionally English ESB, especially since the apparently carefully selected hops are not overly expressive and citrusy as they would be in a typical American amber ale; in any case cleverly put together, easily drinkable but at the same time not lacking in richness either. Well done.
