The colour comes from dark roasted barley, balanced with just the right amount of sweet, rolled oatmeal.
We mill both right here in the brewery, giving us complete control over flavour and freshness. The true taste of malt shines through, balanced by the sweetness of pure Scottish heather honey.
Hops: Challenger, Progress
Malts: Pale Ale, Roast, Crystal, Chocolate

500 ml bottle. Major plus for the Scottish on the bottle and cap. Pours a deep mahogany/brown color with a medium cream colored head. A light nutty metallic and fruity nose. The flavor is great: berries, toasted malt, metal, sweet fruit and honey. Creamy palate. Easygoing. I’d love this on Cask in Uig.

Dobry porter i z kremowa piana. Kolor brazowy. W smaku bardzo lekkie ale nuty tresciwe dominuje miód, sliwka i karmelowy slod. Wytrawny finisz. Ciekawy i tresciwy Porter, troche slodkawy w poczatkowym odbiorze, ale polecam

500 ml bottle sampled in 2009. Clear amber body with a small but dense beige head. Nice aroma of caramel malt, roast and dry fruit. Flavor is sweet, mild malty, caramel, coffee and dry fruit. Moderate bitterness. Medium body and decent aftertaste with roast. Not a super brew, but actually quite impressive at only 4,5 % ABV and really balanced. Very quaffable.

500ml bottle from Beer Hawk - Very dark in colour with a thick, but rapidly vanishing head despite fairly lively carbonation. Nose is sweet, roasted malt, burnt sugar and a bit of liquorice. Tastes are predominantly sweet, with the burnt malt continuing through leaving a chocolatey aftertaste. Light smooth body with a little hop bitterness, Nice.

50 cl bottle @ home. Rated on 17.02.2009
Aroma is somewhat light with roasted notes, some oat and hints of licorice. Flavour is sweetish with oaty notes and licorice. Dry finish with coffee and hints of ash. Good.

Cask at Archibald Simpson?s. It pours very deep brown with a medium beige head. The nose is caramel, liquorice, light roast, dark fruit and an almost vinous aspect. The taste is tart berry (particularly raspberry), light roasted malt, caramel, wood, tanginess, fruit cake, vinous aspect and some astringency with a bitter finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. I actually quite like the tangy aspect to the beer but I doubt its meant to be like that....

Bottle from Belmont Station. Pours transparent dark brown with very little head. Aroma seems quite coffee. Med body. Flavor is sort of coffee mixed with cola. Not getting much chocolate. There’s something flavorful that reminds of seaweed. Some oatiness comes forth. Chocolate seems to increase. This keeps presenting different aspects. It finishes dry and astringent. Seems complex I guess. Whatever I certainly like it.

4th Beer in a random British Tasting Evening on 8th Jan 2011. The 500ml brown bottle was poured into an ’Abbot Ale’ glass tankard. Dark red, ruby, ruby, ruby red! The off white head fell away to a collar and wispy covering too fast, sadly. Roasted Barley aroma, couldn’t find Heather Honey or Oats in the smell, both are mentioned on the label as being in the brew. It smells sweeter than it tastes. Mellow malty flavours flow through the mouth and this easy to drink beer covers a host of styles, toying with Stout, Porters and Winter Warmers with a Scottish dark bitter/ale feel. Smooth and rich, a fine beer. Different and very drinkable.

50cl bottle, thanks to Lewis. Pours dark chestnut with a thin white head. The nose has coffee and hazelnut. The taste has burnt malt, heading into dry liquorice, then more burnt malt. The palate has medium body and texture with a burnt malt drying finish. Overall, this is not bad, but I’d rather have a fresher finish.

500ml bottle. Pours dark caramel with a medium head. Aroma is chocolate and a few sour notes. Taste has faint chocolate to start. Some grass in the finish. A bit boring.
