Keg at Euston Tap, London. A dark amber coloured pour with a decent off white head on top. Interesting hoppy, rye aroma. Overwhelming taste of rye, spice, hoppy, citrus fruit, caramel. It’s not a bad IPA but I’m unlikely to seek this one out again.

From a 355ml bottle on 22/3/2012 (2012 edition). Pours a relatively clear light amber with a biggish head. Has a lovely citrusy, resiny, hoppy aroma. There’s some sweet orange and caramel malt at the start, but this is dominated by spicy, peppery bitterness, which lingers long. The rye gives this one a real peppery twist, but there is sufficient balance to make it both notable and very enjoyable.

This one has a slightly bready nose with a tiny undercurrent of caramel and a little grass. The taste has that usual hoppy taste with a strong grapefruit flavour that rips down the middle of your tongue. In contrast, there’s an unfocused flavour which spreads across the whole tongue - is it the rye? Frankly I don’t know what rye tastes like, but I can say that it’s pretty rough, but funnily enough that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

On tap. Clear dark amber with a dense off-white head. Dry nutty aroma. Medium body, some initial caramel notes quickly suppressed by a distinct and somewhat rough bitterness. Absolutely clean and well made but the hop profile is a bit unrefined to my liking. 100312

Tap at Neighborhood, SD. It pours clear amber, with a fluffy white head. The nose is bubblegum, sweet tangerine, rye, spice and herbs (sage and thyme). The taste is wood, resin, rye, lemon soap, metal (from carbonation), umami aspect and a some spice, with a long bitter-dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Actually tastes a lot like homebrew... Still pretty enjoyable though.

Bottle. Clear copper with two fingers of off white head that lasts pretty well and laces in rings. Rather modest aroma of spices, forest floor and grapefruit - no malt or caramel or obvious rye, and a bit dodgily green. The taste is modestly sweet with bread, pepper, juniper berries pretty light citrus notes, apples. Oily mouthfeel. Nice bitterness at the end with lots of pepper. Impressive and characterful after a bit of an iffy aroma. [3.7] Aroma is still pretty gentle, but whatever was bothering me is either not there or is no longer bothering me.

Draft @ Bishops Arms Savoy, Malmö. Pours a pale amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty peachy hoppy citrus aroma. Fruity malty hoppy bitter peachy citrus flavor. Has a fruity malty hoppy bitter peachy bitter finish.

I didn’t mind Glissade, but if kicking it to the curb means we get Ruthless Rye from now on, them right on. This beer is absolutely delicious, one of the best releases from the sudden flood of new Sierra Nevada creations that have hit the market in the past couple years. Ruthless Rye has a nose that begs you to slam the pint, citrussy and pungent with a noticeable swipe of rye. Tastes pretty dang good; starts bright and citric and mildly sweet before a tangy, spicy rye note carries the beer into a hoppy, dry, classic IPA finish. Wicked label design too.

Bottle. Grapefruit hops, bready malt aroma. Clear amber with a medium off white head and some good lacing. Rye bread, resinous pine and grapefruit hops flavor, finishing a little peppery. Medium body.
