Rye has been a staple grain for millennia—sought after for its stubborn resilience in the field and revered for its unique flavor. Ruthless Rye IPA is brewed with rustic grains for refined flavors, combining the peppery spice of rye and the bright citrusy flavors of whole-cone hops to create a complex ale for the tumultuous transition to spring.

Pungent cat urine nose with lesser yet associated pine needle notes. Crystal clear copper, medium yellow head. Potpourri flavor, resinous daffodil, marigold, and pine. Excessively bitter even for the style. I’m sure this is rated highly because of the so-called extremophiles, but this beer lacks moderation and balance. Alcohol is not noticeable, but damn, why so freaking overboard with the floral hops? Uprated after acclimating myself to the extreme hoppiness, but it’s still too much.

12oz bottle from Pick’s poured into a shaker. Pours a dark copper with a half finger of white head. Aroma of citrus and pine hops. Taste is medium-heavy bitter. Lots of pine and citrus with a something a little peppery. Full bodied with a thick and creamy texture. Lively carbonation and an insanely long, super bitter finish. Overall, this beer is awesome. Much better than that glissade that it’s replacing. I could drink this everyday.

Bottle. Rye malt and citrus/pine hops aroma. Clear amber color with moderate head. Sweet toffee, rye malt and moderately bitter grapefruit peel/pine hops flavor. Great balance. This is spectacular - really love this beer.

12oz bottle. Filtered amber-tan color. Big, frothy, steady beige head. Flowery hop aroma. Some gingerbread and caramel tones, but quite hop centered. Sweet, full of flavor, the Rye makes it a little sugary for me. Whereas the Glissade was sublime and subtle, this is sort of in your face and messy. A pretty solid beer still, especially at the pricepoint, just not one I see myself wanting to revisit so much.

Pours deep amber into a shaker. White head with good retention recedes leaving spider lacing to skim surface. Sweet caramel, rye and resin aromas. Medium bodied with upfront pumpernickel turning to dank resin and grapefruit in the lasting finish.

Sample at the impromptu Kuhnhenn tasting on 01/17/2012: This brew is a brownish-orange color with a medium off-white head that evaporates slowly. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of grainy malt and floral hops. Medium body with a spicy hops character that has herbal and floral notes. Some citrus and sweet malt in the background. The finish is moderately bitter with a resiny hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

355ml bottle from Whole Foods, San Francisco, CA

Pours dark orange with a smooth foamy head. Aroma has notes of caramel malts, hops and rye. Taste is quite bitter and malty with notes of bread, fruity hops, pine and hints of rye and spices. Finish is malty and sticky. Nice malty IPA with rye.

Pour is a cloudy brown with a large white head. Aroma is a spicy hop with a deffinate rye malt. Flavor is more big rye with a minor hop. Finish leaves a nice rye bready malt on the tounge. SN really went for the rye aspect on this one and they really hit it, just wish there were more hops. Also great artwork on the label.

12 ounce bottle from the Utah State Store. Pours a clear brown/red color with a medium white head. A sweet nose of citrus, earthy rye and caramel. A very nice flavor; smooth citrus, some light bitterness, spicy earthy hops, very smooth, finishes with oranges. This hits late winter quite well. Sierra Nevada always does these seasonals well.

Pours a crystal clear golden copper color with a good sized white head that persists and leaves much lace on the way down. Smells of garlic, green onion, and pepper mostly. There’s a faint bready malt down there somewhere, but this one is all hops. Taste is more garlic and onion with a bit of spice and pepper. Little to no malt to be found. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slick resinous mouthfeel. Nice rye IPA but a bit vegetative for my tastes. I could drink these, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to seek these.
