A strong black beer with rich, complex aromas and taste. Smooth on the palate with powerful roasted malt flavours. We use 4 different malt styles - pale, crystal, chocolate and malted wheat - each of which has a unique character. Local Fuggles hops added at various stages during the boil enhance the beer's depth.

Old rating from 2012 - Pint from the cask at the Swan Inn, Falmer. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aromas & tastes of dried fruits, toffee, nuts, hints of spice & malt. Medium body. Dry slightly sweet finish

Bottle from Redh. Appearance - dark brown to black with a cream to tan head. Nose - sweet toffee going into molasses. Malt loaf and dried fruit. Taste - general fruit cake thing going on. Dried orange and prunes, malt loaf and a little sweet spice. Molasses again. Palate - medium bodied, sweet middle with some dryness from the malt on the finish. Overall - lovely beer.

Bottle fr9m the brewery. Really ha e To breath but the aroma is actually pretty pleasant - almond and sugar/blue glue stick, with a hint of booze. Opaque dark brown. Bubbly beige head soon leaves a few isolated floats [sounds more pleasant than 'floaters']. Light bitter with a sweet steak. Figs, plums and berries. Medium bodied. Slightly sticky, creamy. Flat carbonation. Long finish. I was disappointed by their Barley Wine but this is kind of Christmas pud SEA that I like. Perhaps a tad muted but at the same time it's not overly boozy. For me the best beer I've had from this lot.

4/4/2018. Bottle from The Vineyard, Dorking. Pours dark brown with a fluffy beige head. Aroma of dark fruits, roasted malt, toffee, chocolate, coffee, dried fruit and mild spice. Medium plus sweetness, light bitterness. Medium to full bodied, slick texture, average carbonation. My 12th Hogs Back beer and best so far.

Bottle from Inn at Home, Guildford. Clear dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel, roasted malt and dark fruit. Flavor is quite sweet and moderate bitter. Sweet and moderate bitter finish. 160218

Bottled 500ml. -Brownish coloured with red glare, small off-white head, whiff of caramel in the nose. Toasted malt, caramel, light dried fruits and weak hops with rather flat bitterness in the finish. Rather usuall.

Dark brown body, tiny light tan head. Aroma... Chocolate, good maltiness, light raisin, caramel, lovely! Mild dry malty body caramel, light tart touch, fruity, just a tad soapy. Fresh. Nice enough and yes, tasty. Not a world beater but a very beer nonetheless, just slightly too thin.
