From its forceful aroma of the fruity essences of pears, apples and grapes to a character hinting at anise, pepper, vanilla and fruits gilded in a powdered sugary glaze. Brewed only once a year on December 6, Helles is aged for a full ten months before bottling. It may be hard to imagine doing much better than this golden, robustly toothsome brew, with a few more years under its belt, it grows in complexity and nuance – proving that not only wine can age magnificently gracefully.

Hart! /8/4/6/9/5

2007 bottle. I have just NOT been in the mood for beers lately, so no long listing Christmas beers this year. Pours amber color in my snifter. Hazy, but no particles. Almost no head. Smell is suggestions for red wine and some brandy barrel. I had a whiff of sourness under the cap, but it’s gone in the glass. Taste is big on brandy, no doubt, plus a bit of distilled pear. Backing of banana muffin and honey. Still a slight hop bitterness, like a Belgian tripel. I can see this isn’t for all tastes, and can easily turn down in the cellar. But this is a great beer for the holidays and anytime you’re just sitting around. How will I top this while the Bears are in their playoff games?

Bottle:Clear, copper coloured, small foamy layer; sweet caramel, toasted malt raisins and nuts in the nose, a tinge of molasses detectable, too; full bodied, solid sweet flavour; vinous, sweet and warming finish with a light alcohol burn. Fine winter-warmer..........

Bottle, 14%. Quite peppery aroma, some sweet dried fruit and dust. Hazy dark golden colour. Almost no head. The flavour starts off quite alcoholic, getting a bit rough. Then follow some of the same fruit notes as were in the aroma. Good maltiness and quite sweet. Ending with a warming but rough alcohol burn. Slightly thick mouthfeel.

11.2 oz bottle. I have lots of fearful respect for Samichlaus, the original alcohol-bomb beer. so I was quite interested to see what the Helles had in store. Big cognac-sweet alcohol aroma. Some foamy head which quickly dissipated leaving it rather still. Sweet and sticky, quite fruity in a liqueur-sense. I tend to find this a touch preferable to the "regular" version, perhaps a touch more drinkable. Sugary with almost a honey touch, this is certainly a unique concoction. Sweetness reminiscent of a Tripel, but with the malty quirks of a strong bock. Worth a try certainly.

33cl bottle. orange, small wihte head. sourish alcoholic aroma, eggs. flavor is very sweet, caramelly, warming alc. apricot, quite complex and the alc melts well in with the powerfull flavors. however, you really have to be into lethally strong beers to really appreciate this one. it is more a liqeur than a beer imo.

Bottled (vintage 2007). Light amber-copper color, small white head. Caramelly ryeish malty nose. Very sweet, full body. Molasses, raisins, toffee .. soft sweet palate. Not as alcoholic as one may think. Alcohol comes in the aftertaste, when beer is warming in the stomage. Ryeish malty, sugary aftertaste with notes of lime candy.
