From its forceful aroma of the fruity essences of pears, apples and grapes to a character hinting at anise, pepper, vanilla and fruits gilded in a powdered sugary glaze. Brewed only once a year on December 6, Helles is aged for a full ten months before bottling. It may be hard to imagine doing much better than this golden, robustly toothsome brew, with a few more years under its belt, it grows in complexity and nuance – proving that not only wine can age magnificently gracefully.

Bottle at the DISOB tasting, Den Haag. Poured a clear copper colour with a glass hugging white head. The aroma is rich and alcoholic. The flavour is big bitter and alcoholic. It’s sweet on the palate too and probably tastes like a 19th century Wild West elixir!

Bottle shared at the "Dean’s scared of beer tasting". Pours clear amber with no head. Aroma of caramel, overripe fruits, gravy, candy, butterscotch. Flavor is heavy sweet. Full bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle. Clear golden colour with just a hint of white head that quickly vanishes. Strong aroma of alcohol, vanilla, malt. Flavour is strong, dried fruit, vanilla, well masked alcohol. Well balanced and really good.

Aroma is rather boozy with ripe fruits, strong malty notes and some raisins. Flavour has rather stinging booze, lots of sweetish malt, some fruits and hints of raisins. Way too boozy.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - 2007 vintage, at Kaisla, 20121229) The beer poured deep amber and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, raisin, molasses and dried plum. Palate was medium bodied and warming with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, raisin, alcohol, sweetness and low bitterness. Aftertaste was boozy and bitter. A very promising aroma but the flavour was too close to the one of a boozy East-European lager.

12/11 A 0.33 l bottle from Kuca Piva store, Zagreb. It poured deep golden body with smaller head. Alcoholic and malty aroma, riped fruits, nuts and almonds. Strong flavor, a bit raw, sweetish, gluey, woody and honey malty. Warming, long finish that was sweet as well. Fuller, sticky body. It was better and more drinkable than expected. Although dark version is better indeed, both have lots of similarities and this would also surely age very well.

Great, I finally get to try this one. Thanks heavy for getting it at Kuća Piva! Poured a lovely golden body with a small white head. Alcohol, paper, heavy malt and raisins in the nose. Sweet malty taste, dry breadiness, light glue, paper, just a touch over the top with the sweetness, but not offensive. Ok, nothing special though.
