This deep dark delight harkens back to the days when such brews were shipped to the Imperial Court of Russia. With a firm roasty maltiness balanced against a generous helping of hops, Northwind has what it takes to stand up to the worst its namesake can dish out! Enjoy it by a roaring fire. Formerly called Iditarod Imperial Stout.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, lot 51, no bottle dating. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Slight spotty lacing clings to the glass, with slight alcohol legs. Aromas of big milk chocolate, roasted malt, smoke, cream, toffee, caramel, and light herbal. Very nice and unique aromas with good strength and balance. Taste of milk chocolate, smoke, roasted malt, toffee, cream, coffee, caramel, toast, and earth. No bitterness after the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, roasted malt, cream, toffee, and earth on the finish for a bit. Very nice flavor balance and robustness; minimal cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and body; with a nice creamy and slick mouthfeel; a touch thin for 9% though. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with zero warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice imperial stout. Nice balance of robust and unique stout flavors; and extremely smooth to sip on. Very enjoyable stuff.

bottle - Pours black and has a roast mocha aroma. It tastes of dark roast malt and chocolate with a deep, roasted finish. A full bodied beer, itβs good but lacks the intensity and complexity so often found with this style.

Bottle sample at beerandbeyond farewell tasting at Daganβs place. Thanks zvikar. Very dark brown to black with a beige head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate-flavored cereals, a bit of grainy notes and some roastiness. Sweetish roasty flavor with a smoky note, chocolate and a drier finish. Medium-bodied. Decent. 7/3/6/3/13=3.2

On tap. Pours with a black body with a minimal tan head. Aromas are of roast, dark fruit, licorice and mild alcohol. A bit of bakerβs chocolate. Flavors are malty, bready, and very chalky with dark fruit esters. Muddled flavors, chalky, raisin, alcohol. Medium bubbles with distractingly high carbonation. Fuller bodied, mild warming.

12oz bottles of the 2008, 2009 and 2010 sampled side by side. 2008 bottle has a nose of cherry, brown sugar, light malt, raisins. Flavor is sweet, raisins, malty, some dark chocolate, grapes, orange slices. 2009 bottle smells more of coffee, some maple, a little licorice, cola. Sweeter flavor, slicker and a much heavier cola flavor than the other 2. The 2010 bottle is the maltiest smelling and tasting of all. A touch of bread and coffee in both the nose and flavor. Interesting vertical overall. The 2010 nose was my favorite. The 2008 flavor was my favorite. The 2009 seemed lost with the others.
