2007 batch. Comes to me completely black with a thick light brown head than fades into a surface covering and stick lacing. As usual served to cold, had to wait to warm up. Aroma is medium strong roast coffee bean espresso with some light sweet prune. Taste is light sweetness mixed with a just a present amount of coffee and leaves that roast-y espresso aftertaste. Just a hint of coffee bitterness at the end with an earthy toasty feel. A medium body and extremely quaffable for such a beer. The thing about this beer is that it is definitely a coffee beer, strong on coffee, without going over the top (i.e. Hitachino Espresso).
Pint pour at the Publick House, live rating @ brewpub..
Re-rate 2008 batch. Difference is the flavor had a mineral aspect. A bit of slick tobacco at the end of the flavor. Otherwise still coffee everywhere. 8/4/7/3/15.

Growler. Dark black pour with dark tan head that didn’t stick around. The nose is filled with strong, black coffee — like opening a pouch of ground coffee. There are notes of roasted malts, hops, chocolate and a wiff of vanilla. The taste is mostly roasted malts and coffee with a bit of rubbery flavor. The finish is dry and bitter. Thin body with moderate carbonation. The bitter aftertaste sticks around for a little while.

Tap at the brewpub - a lot of coffee beers taste too much like coffee and not enough like beer; others are the opposite - this beer strikes a nice balance between the too - the aroma is of freshly ground itallian roast (or some other dark roast), but has enough background lactic/malt sweetness to cut it - the beer is very dry, complimenting the coffee flavor, but there is enough chocolate malt, dry mineral character, etc. to satisty even those beer drinkers that don’t like coffee - solid and well-balanced.
