Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to New England’s original brewers, a tip of the cap to historic beer recipes calling for the use of pumpkins that date back to early colonial times. It’s also a beer we’re fiercely proud of – in a sea of imitators, it continues to stand out. Just like Smuttynose itself.
Brewed with real pumpkin and traditional spices – think cinnamon, nutmeg and clove – it’s a hearty, deeply balanced ale with a cornucopia of fall aromas to match a flavor profile that’s robust and complex without being overwhelming.
This is a beer with complements of pumpkin – not the other way around. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

12 oz. bottle, pours a cloudy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma brings out light pumpkin spices -- very simple and uninteresting. Flavour is simplistic, with spicy autumn notes (cinnamon and nutmeg) and not much else. What the hell are they going for? Pointless beer.

Bottle - Lots of soapy notes and pumpkin spice. Copper gold with no heat. Tastes much like it smells. Not good.

Poured from bottle orange brown with a two finger foamy off white head. Aromas of cinnamon clove and caramel malt. It’s a beer with pumpkin pie spice. It’s good for what it is but needs actual pumpkins next time.

Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale 6.6%, I picked this up last winter in Rome so the best before date is actually June 22, 2015 which means this beer’s past it’s best but hey that’s how things go when you’re an expat I guess. It pours a nice looking orange gold with a fairly thick light beige head. So far, so good. The nose is cinnamon, allspice, possibly coriander and some pumpkin flesh as well. Soft bodied, it feels like it may have lost some carbonation over time. The taste is nutty pumpkin flesh, cinnamon and light pumpkin pie spices. A pretty standard pumpkin beer, not over the top like Pumking but then again that might be due to it’s age. Good fun stuff.

Bottle from systembolget. Sorry US, but I just can’t get the idea with pumpkin beer. This was one of the better but still nothing for me. Just spices all over.

Bottle thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - golden amber with an attractive lacy head. Nose - pumpkin and nutmeg. Cloves too. Taste - nutmeg and light cloves. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy middle section and a dry spicy finish. Overall - they have tried to hide the pumpkin (successfully) in the spices. I’d like to taste more pumpkin. Good though.

Bottle at Ash’s. Pours hazy amber with a thin white head. Aromas of spice, clove, light fruit. Taste is nutmeg, spicy, not finding the pumpkin. Dry spicy finish.
