Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to New England’s original brewers, a tip of the cap to historic beer recipes calling for the use of pumpkins that date back to early colonial times. It’s also a beer we’re fiercely proud of – in a sea of imitators, it continues to stand out. Just like Smuttynose itself.
Brewed with real pumpkin and traditional spices – think cinnamon, nutmeg and clove – it’s a hearty, deeply balanced ale with a cornucopia of fall aromas to match a flavor profile that’s robust and complex without being overwhelming.
This is a beer with complements of pumpkin – not the other way around. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Pours cloudy, light amber, thick off-white head. Aroma is nutmeg, pumpkin, cinnamon. Strong carbonation. Taste is a leafy bitter...with pumpkin and spice notes beneath...tea.... Hoppy. A nicely different pumpkin ale.......more beer than pumpkin.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 1/19/2014. Pours moderately hazy bright orange amber color with a 2 finger dense off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big pumpkin, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, gingerbread, toast, floral, and herbal. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of spice, pumpkin, and malt notes; with good strength. Taste of pumpkin, toast, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, gingerbread, floral, light pine, and herbal earthiness. Light bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of pumpkin, toast, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, gingerbread, and floral on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and complexity of malt, pumpkin, and spice flavors; with solid robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and moderately crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good pumpkin ale. Good balance of malt and spice flavors; and very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Fruity pumpkin malt and light pumpkin spices aroma. Hazy deep honey gold with a large ivory head. Vegetal pumpkin malt, pumpkin spices, and moderately bitter weedy herbal flavor. Body on the light side of medium, moderate carbonation. Not the worst pumpkin beer I’ve had, but I did not care for the weedy bitter contribution to the overall flavor.

So I ordered a Smuttynose Wheat Wine and ended up with this because the taps had just been changed. Ended up probably with some of the wheat wine in it, but if so it didn’t do any harm to the beer. A pretty decent pumpkin beer, and this from a non-believer. Clove and ginger, pumpkin and sweet finish. Tap at Novare Res.

Pours a slightly hazy medium golden color with a decent sized white head that displays moderate retention. The aroma is all pie spices, cinnamon nutmeg and all spice come to mind. Light sugary malt deep underneath with a hint of earth. The flavor is a little tart but sweet with brown sugar and flavored with pie spices. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slick spicy tart mouthfeel. Its a pumpkin beer, a bit too light in body and sweetness for my tastes.

12 fl oz bottle thanks to rhialistic! On October 7, 2012Hazy golden to honey color, fluffy off-white head. Sweet, spicy scent. Sweet, spicy, bitter taste. Bitter aftertaste. Spritzy mouthfeel, medium dry bitterness.

12oz bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a cloudy dark orange with about a finger of white head. Aroma of baking spices with just a hint of pumpkin. Taste is light bitter. Herbal hops, baking spices, clove and pumpkin. Light bodied with a thin texture. Flat carbonation and a long finish. Overall, not bad. This is a good example of a pumpkin beer instead of a pumpkin pie beer.

Cask. In August. More like summer squash I guess. Cloudy orange color, huge fluffy white head. Arima of subtle gourd and light nutmeg. Taste is also subtle fruit(or is it a vegetable?) with more prominent spice. Subtle enough to be refreshing in the summer.
