Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to New England’s original brewers, a tip of the cap to historic beer recipes calling for the use of pumpkins that date back to early colonial times. It’s also a beer we’re fiercely proud of – in a sea of imitators, it continues to stand out. Just like Smuttynose itself.
Brewed with real pumpkin and traditional spices – think cinnamon, nutmeg and clove – it’s a hearty, deeply balanced ale with a cornucopia of fall aromas to match a flavor profile that’s robust and complex without being overwhelming.
This is a beer with complements of pumpkin – not the other way around. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Pours hazy amber with a slight white head. Aroma of pie spice and something more. Could be extra clove. Med body with strong carb. Flavor is definitely pie spice. The spice is so strong it’s hiding the punkin. It’s almost gingerbready. Better this way.

Bottle. Pours copper. Off white head. Nose/taste of pumpkin, all spice, nutmeg, cinnamon and pie crust. Very spicy. Lighter bodied.

Sampled from a bottle. Pours orange with a small beige head. The aroma is pumpkins, cinnamon, and cloves. The flavor is sweet up front with a lot of bitterness and sourness in the finish. The palate is light, watery, and sticky. Overall, this has a great pumpkin pie aroma, but the flavor and mouthfeel is awful.

So here it is, the smutty pumpkin. Pours like a brownish hazy pale ale. Darker than the photo fer sure. Smell is a little sweet and more powerful than the 5% indicates. Sweet like a cinny bun without the icing, the smell is. First taste is rather strong but the mild punken Flavor is in there. Bitter usuall cheap ale flavors. Nasty veggie background similar to many punken beers. This is why its the last tasted out of 2 dozen other beers; its a pumpkin beer. Not many real good ones out there. My fave is Cottonwood Pumpkin Spiced Ale and this cannot hold a candle to it.

Pours hazy burnt orange color with off white head. Aromas of cinnamon and clove. Not much pumpkin pie spice flavor. Medium body with average carbonation.

On tap at the Stags Head. My quest for pumpkin continues. This is a medium bided ale with good carbonation and hoppiness. Tastes of pumpkin spice and some breadiness. pretty enjoyable

I got this on the tour. A very well done pumpkin, not sure how it would be in a bottle. Very drinkable on tap. If u ever find it on tap, don’t pass it up if you like the style.

not bad but a little too mild for me. If I’m in the mood for a pumpkin ale, obviously around October, I want something that tastes like pumpkin and gets me in an autumn state of mind. This one was way too bland and the mix of the pumpkin and spices made such a muddled flavor that they sort of canceled each other out. Good hoppiness and very easy to drink, but if youre in the mood for some pumpkin deliciousness, this isnt the one.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a bright orange-amber color with a huge foamy yellow-white head that lingered and produced great lacing. The aroma was dry and spicy with notes of nutmeg, cinnamon and clove. The flavor was sour, tangy and off with light dry nutmeg and cinnamon, The finish was long, dry, bitter and very much off - almost rancid. Not good.

Botte. Simply put, I consider this the gold standard for pumpkin ales. Not too light and not over-the-top, this beer is nicely balanced. Pours a light orange with a fine white head. Rich pumpkin and nutmeg aroma. Flavor is sweetly malty with strong yet restrained pumpkin character. Lingering pumpkin and spice aftertaste. Solid.
