Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to New England’s original brewers, a tip of the cap to historic beer recipes calling for the use of pumpkins that date back to early colonial times. It’s also a beer we’re fiercely proud of – in a sea of imitators, it continues to stand out. Just like Smuttynose itself.
Brewed with real pumpkin and traditional spices – think cinnamon, nutmeg and clove – it’s a hearty, deeply balanced ale with a cornucopia of fall aromas to match a flavor profile that’s robust and complex without being overwhelming.
This is a beer with complements of pumpkin – not the other way around. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

This Pumpkin ale poured a light orange colour with a quick living, bright white head. A little lacing. To the nose there are scents of alspice, pumpkin pie, herbs and bread. First taste was smooth but a little watery. Flavours of spice, pumpkin and hopps. Finish is slightly bitter with hopp flavour lingering into the palate.

6th August 2008. On tap at GBBF. Pleasant fruity and sharp start but then extreme mouc drying spicy finish. The finish really lets this beer down. Hard work.

(Bottled) Amber and lightly hazy. Medium sized white head. Spices and malts in aroma. Medium bodied palate with medium carbonation. Malts, spices, hops, coriander, bitterness and treacle in taste. Sweet, malty and lightly bitter aftertaste. Pretty ok.

I tried this at the Great Lakes Beer Fest, from the bottle. Relatively smoky for a pumpkin ale and it provided a nice touch. I could make out the spices pretty well and everything was nicely balanced. One of the better pumpkin ales out there.

Yellow with a small white head. Strong cinnamon and nutmeg aroma with a hint of nutty pumpkin. Sweet and spicy flavour with a ridiculous amount of nutmeg in the aftertaste.

Overall Impression: My notes from last year were accurate on this one. I'll keep it right around here, my impression hasn't really changed too much.

Aroma: The aroma is fairly mild, its got pumpkin spice, and malts, not much else
Appearance: The look of this one is a nice hazy golden-orange with a nice white head
Flavor: Decent, but not great, flavor of pumpkin spice malts, but also something that is just a touch off
Palate: There's a decent amount of body on this one, and a highly carbonated mouthfeel
Overall Impression: This is a decent pumpkin beer, I'm not sure why I had it rated so low before, but it really deserved to be higher then it was. This score is now more of an accurate depiction of my real impression of this beer.

12 fl oz bottle. Pours golden orange with a small white head. Aroma is pumpkin sweet and quite spiced. Light bodied. Sweet vegetable, malty and solid coriander and ginger spiced flavoured. Holds mild bitterness and dry pumpkin finish. Fine brew - just not my thing.

12 oz bottle courtesy of eaglefan538. Pour is orange golden hazed with a one inch off white head. Aroma of clove, cinnamon and pumpkin pie spiciness. Clean, bright, perhaps a bit much, though it is a pumpkin beer. Taste is big pumpkin, clove and black pepper. The palate is medium, grassy and drying. Decent pumpkin beer. Courtesy of Sea Bass. Pours deep gold with copper core and thin white head. The aroma is sweetness, pumpkin, faint spices and Belgian candi sugar. The taste is big sweetness bringing up pumpkin notes, mild spices, sugar sweet malts, a moderate level of spicy hop ting and some fruity esters. Pretty good brew.

Courtesy of damienblack. Pours orange, white head. Aroma, lots of pumpkin and spices. Taste of pumpkin with cinnamon in aftertaste. Hoppy with enough spices, leaves a lingering thick / metalic mouthfeel.
