Dedicated to Spanish author Juan de la Cueva, who, in 1575, wrote of a Mexican dish that combined seedless chipotles with beer: Chipotle Ale is based on Rogue’s Oregon Golden Ale, but delicately spiced with smoked chipotle chile peppers. Deep golden in color with a tight head, rich malty aroma, delicately smooth and crisp flavor, and subtle chipotle chili finish. Formerly known and packages as Mexicali Rogue, Chipotle Ale is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, and Maier Munich Malts; Willamette and Cascade hops; and Smoked Jalapeno (Chipolte) Peppers. Chipotle Ale is targeted for spring release and available in a 22-ounce bottle and on draft. Blend it with Rogue Chocolate Stout and create a Mole’ black and tan!

On tap at La Cerveteca, Barcelona. Amber coloured, small to medium sized creamy off-white head, hops and caramel in the nose. Toasted malt, mild hoppy and fruity with notes of caramel and smoke. Also mild spicy nose in slightly acidic finish.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Rotem’s place. Thanks Tom L. Hazy amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of stale hops, malt and smokiness. Sweetish malty flavor with a bit of caramel, a bit of smokiness, and a faint hot hint in the finish. Medium-bodied.

Bottle - Toasted malts, grains with a nice smokey chipotle touch. Perfectly clear amber with a rich off white head. Taste is all chipotle and malt with a tiny hint of bitterness that accentuates the heat of the pepper. This is definitely a flavored beer that is not balanced or for everyone, but I love the smoky chipotle and consider it a great beer.

Ooh, ales brewed with chili peppers. I’ve had only a handful in my time, and pretty much all of them have turned out to be total disasters. Yet here’s Rogue, a pretty well-known craft brewer, taking a stab at the style. It pours with minimal head and an amber-copper body, like a brewhouse IPA. The aroma is an odd mix of caramel, malt, and tortilla salsa. Did someone drop a quesadilla into my beer? Did I somehow wander into a Mexican restaurant with a beer? The flavour comes off as close to a smoked ale - the pepper is there, and it’s balanced enough to work with the malts and hops to pull off a shoe-leather kind of flavour. This is better than I expected, but the palate is sadly too watery. I’ll finish this bottle, as I almost always do with bombers, but I wouldn’t buy it again.

It pours a light amber and gives the same color body. A really nice looking foamy lumpy white one inch head appears and lasts for a good three minutes before gently dieing into the body. Some spotty lacing is left. The smell has the jalapeno peppers powerfully up front, malts only come in after a half an hour of warming up. The taste is the same adding a very nice dry smokey aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium and sharp on the tongue, possibly because of the peppers that were added. A nice \"hot\" feel rushes over my tongue after about five minutes of having a couple sips of this, interesting. Overall, this is good for me and good for its style.

650ml bottle from Appellation Wines. Pours a red-amber with some haze and a nice bit of lace. The nose has sundried tomatoes and a slight smokey pepper note. The taste has a slight prickle of spice and smoke and then the spice returns. There’s a malty backbone but the spice dominates a little too much as you go through the bottle. The palate is medium bodied with a creamy texture and a finish that would be fairly balanced were it not for the growing spiciness.

Tap at Varga Bar, Philly - 24/05/12. Clear copper/amber with a small to medium off-white head. A little hops on the nose, malts and smoke. A little malt in the taste, peppery and you get the jalapeno/chiptole kick in the aftertaste. Medium body and carbonation, you get a warming kick. Not a beer I’d rush back to but does what it states I guess so rated accordingly.

Bottle. Caramel malt smoky chili aroma. Hazy orange amber with a minimal white head. Smoky malt flavor, an a very very slight chili spice in the finish. Light to medium body, low carbonation. Smoked beers are among my favorites, so I really liked the smoky malt flavor. I would have liked this better if there had been a more pronounced chili burn.
